Almost every medicine for UC ultimately works by reducing the inflammation of colon mucous membrane.
As we know, UC is limited to mucous membrane of colon and does not go deeper (unlike CD)
So, the common sense conclusion is " ANY THING WHICH REDUCES INFLAMMATION OF COLON MUCOUSA IS A REMEDY FOR UC." Nothing mysterious about it.
We know that Turmeric, Boswellia, Nopal cactus, and vegetables like Okra , basically reduce inflammation
just like Masalamine and even the Humira type meds.
My own experience with the natural anti- inflammatory mentioned above further deepens my belief that many things can help in UC. However, the degree of severity of UC differs from one person to another. In US, Doctors do not take into consideration this fact that some have mild, some moderate, some severe disease . Therefore, they jump to the most powerful and the most harmful meds (side effects wise) Fear of Lawyers and drug company propaganda also, affect Doctors' capacity to be more logical about treatment of milder versions of disease.
In my case, Humira was prescribed as GI said it's PAN-COLITIS with severe inflammation all thru colon.
I refused to be on Humira and agreed for Masalamine (Apriso) after intial prednisone course for 21 days.
Presently, I am in 99% remission on 2 tabs of Apriso a day PLUS a a glassful of refreshing Nopal Juice in morning , Turmeric caps, Probiotics, green leafy vegetables esp Okra. NO symptoms for last almost 3 months.
UC is often limited to the mucous membrane but severe ulcerative colitis does often go beyond that. I know my flares mine involved perforation of the colon; more of the fulminant type. Also, 21 days of prednisone is no short duration as many in here have never taken steriods.
My first flare went into remission using, at most, 2 weeks prednisone then I took nothing for inflammation for years until the next flare. I would keep doing what you're doing but never put up the mesalamine or lower it and don't be shocked if something should happen again as the supplements are like putting ice on a 3 degree burn when a flare comes back.
Those anti-inflammatory foods I used never helped although I wish they had; hope they do for you and keep us posted throughout the years please.
Nopal might just be another of a multitude of (apparent) anti-inflammatory plants.
Prescript
ions aren't all poison, though, as the active ingredient is sometimes safer than a plant it's derived to mimic as often plant contain undesirable chemicals. Doctors in the US are from all over the world; they do consider naturals but it's difficult to recommend plants when there is no data of their effectiveness and side effects.
