I teach second grade in Chicago Public Schools and have NO time for any colon antics during the day. I also think the stress does me in. Too bad I love my job more than my colon! I refuse to do less/try less just because my butt won't cooperate.

Are there any other teachers out there trudging through with this lovely disease? How do you deal?

I'm not a teacher, but an SLP working in the schools. I feel the same way, and am lucky to have an accessible bathroom attached to the special education room we work out of. My strategies are to wake up earlier to try to "empty out the system" before going to work, yoga for relaxation at night, not eating the food in the teacher's lounge under any circumstances, and taking a strategic personal day when possible.

However, if I was flaring badly, I'm not sure how I would be able to handle it. Education is one of those fields that is not UC-friendly at all. I sympathize with you, and hope others have more helpful tips!

Wow! Thanks, libduc and ipoop! I agree that strategic days off are important. I've been trying to do that this year. Thanks also for the great links! This forum is such an amazing resource and community!

I think that my biggest problem re: my job and IBD is that we have only 2 staff bathrooms in the entire school and they are all private , 1 stall deals. With about 85 teachers and staff members, it's always in use!

I am a teacher in a preschool. Luckily I have a co-teacher or assistant teacher that is with me most of the day. If I'm by myself I can call a neighboring room for help. Technically I'm not supposed to leave my co-teacher out of ratio but sometimes I just can't help it. There is a bathroom right across the hall from my room which has come in handy several times. If I'm having a really bad day and know I will be in the bathroom most of the day I do call in.

Could you use the student loo's if they were closer and more of them or is that a no-no?

I'm not a teacher but often have to do big client presentations in new locations where I have no idea where a bathroom will be etc and would be completely inappropriate for the lead presenter to escape to the toilet during or poop themselves infront of new clients lol Eeek! I definitely do the get up early and try and empty out thing.

I've had UC for 10 years and have never got into the diastop type pills before as I was worried what the effect would be but I'm starting to experiment with them now for those times when its bad to see if they help.

Oh girl I work my butt off! Literally haha! Like you, I refuse to work less, try less or take it easy...I want my kiddos to have the best of everything! I teach preschool and my co-worker is a "co-person" because she hasn't worked a day in her life, she is freaking useless. I was going through a terrible time with my health issues and as soon as I stopped talking to her, my issues go better. I just let it go, it is very hard for me to just let go of things because I hold grudges from when I was 5 and I am 28 now, it is awful, but I jut did it, didn't care, did my half and it ended up being better for me. Just do your job, do what makes you feel happy, it is very tough to deal with kids of any age, but if you love your job, then you can do it!
