Do you have other autoimmune diseases in addition to UC/Crohns? I have skin psoraisis but it's usually not bad. I believe that one day I'll reach the point of needing surgery for my UC and I wondered if I'll see my overactive immune system attack something else once my colon is gone.

Just wondering...

I had severe eczema when I was a kids (9-13 yrs of age) it's common to have more than one autoimmune condition/disease from years of reading up on it. The way I looked at it was my gross and painful inflammation went from attacking my skin (eczema) to attacking my intestines (crohn's), depressing for sure.

I'm not sure if I do but one side of my family has a great collection altogether besides my UC - MS, uveitis, vasculitis, psoriasis and Parkinson's (which some say may be autoimmune newsroom.cumc.columbia.edu/blog/2014/04/17/parkinsons-autoimmune-disease/ ) - interestingly that has been no cancer on this side of the family as far as I know. The other side of the family has no autoimmune disease but cancers are common.

Yes I have chronic Uticartia (hives) and I'm probably getting some kind of arthritis.

20-25 percent of uc patients have autoimmune diseases beyond their intestine. Skin and joint issues are the most common with uc patients. I have eczema.

I have Ankylosing Spondylitis, UC and Graves' disease. Lucky me I know. Aldo have psoriasis patches on scalp.

Yes I have type one diabetes and it really stinks!!! It can be very very difficult to control one vs. the other. Usually when one is in check, the other starts to act up. :/

Hashimotos and some form of autoimmune spinal arthritis my RA has chosen not to name. My family is also an auto-immune cluster: MS, crohns, psoriasis. No cancer whatsoever. My father always said he thought excessive immune cell function from AI diseases was protective for cancer.

It can be somewhat common to have more than one autoimmune disease at some point but it is my opinion that the odds of this wouldn't change just because you had your colon out due to UC. The odds would still be the same. I think it is a stretch to argue that just because you took away one autoimmune disease then your body would find a way to give you another one.

No other disorders for me. However, my great aunt had pemphigus (look it up...scary ai disorder) and my aunt on the other side of the family has RA.

I am going thru unexplained Central Nervous System disorder right now. My Neurologist has not diagnosed it yet.

I've had inflammatory arthritis in multiple joints since my late 30's. Graves disease, eczema and hearing loss that could be related to AI. UC was actually a latecomer in my AI spectrum.

I have IC too (inflamed bladder)
The IC is a mild case. My 2 months UC is worse.
I believe our organs are healthy.
But our problem is systemic.
Our immune response is to blame. not the organs.
There are some meds coming up that will temper the immune system and stop the immune cells from attacking us!

I am recently recovering from costochondritis (PAINFUL), some kind of weird rash, and hypothyroidism (not Hashimoto) so don't know if it could be autoimmune related.
