I know i need to try to see if Canasa will work for me but I am having a hard time trying it for the first time. Its the whole putting things in my booty situation.
Do you guys have any advice on how to make it not so difficult and painful? Any tips on when to do it time-wise, how long , how often, etc.
Did it work for most of you guys or did it make things worse? I am just never done it and really nervous about
it.
Any feedback of this would be helpful.
Thanks so much. Love the forum and all the users.

in order for you to be a "real" member of this club, you have to perform the ritual that the rest of us learned to embrace:
suck it up and shove it in !
good luck and have fun -

Relaxation and practice should help. If you are worries about
wasting expensive Canasa, you could practice with glyceryn suppositories, or a disposable fleet enema. While not talked about
a lot, the anal-insertion of suppositories or enema tips is a very common thing if you consider all the hemorrhoids and constipation and bowel cleansing in the general population.
Done gently and relaxed, it should not hurt. You could use a little dab of a numbing agent like Nupercanal if you are tender and/or concerned.
But in general, this is a skill you need as a UC patient.

I did not find Canasa difficult to insert although mornings are never the best because natural movements seemed to make it come out quickly, Canasa seemed to jump start a BM in other words. So for me noon or after is the best time.
However Cansa supps never gave me as much benefit as mesalamine enemas. Retention enemas are a little more challenging to keep in so I always do it at bedtime when lying down and relaxed. Once you get used to Canasa then give the enemas a try. They do so much good and reach much more area than the supps do.

Try putting vitamin E around. It helps to slide it in. It definately helps with inflammation in rectum. If your inflammation is further up, you should consider enema. Enema bothers me more than canasa but when in flare, I do what needs to be done. Hope it works for you.

I usually warm the tip under hot water to make it slippery. Then i put it in with my finger. I don't even touch my butt with my finger, just push the supp in and it locks into place a second later. I don't find them to be all that effective for me lately unfortunately.

Until i use the bathroom. If i do it before bed, I sleep with it in. If I do it in the morning, sometimes I will pass it at some point during the day. Depends how much I am going and how active my symptoms are. It doesn't usually pass like it went in, it dissolves and it will look like waxy remnants. I've been using them for years sometimes 2x a day even. Sometimes I use other stuff instead.

Just don't fart with it in unless you're on the toilet....you won't feel what you've expelled and makes a mess un underwear.
No big deal to insert them....do it either while on the toilet or squatting. Much easier than laying down in my experience.
Once it's up, squeeze your butt sphincter to get it above that area.
Keep us posted.

Use astroglide...I know, I know. Canasa never really worked that well for me, but it does for some people. Hope you are one of them!

I've been putting these things in for 2 years and I still don't enjoy the process. I use a bit of Vaseline.
quincy: it is possible to fart without losing it. it takes skill though. :)

ki-wi, i don't think it's skill, it's luck and timing from my experience. the longer you've retained it, the better chance of a dry fart. I've learned the hard way.

In my experience, Canasa never really dissolves. It is very oily and will result in some grossness pretty much no matter what.

Speaking of relaxing before inserting if you are really nervous. I would say the best time would be before bed after a warm bath.
I use both enema and suppositories. When my flare is bad and I have an hard time kepping stuff in, I find it is much easier after a warm bath.
I also warm the tip of the suppository with warm water. I do not use Vaseline because I'm afraid it could go on portion of where de medicine is needed and won't get the benefit from it. But I beleive I'm just overly carefull ... Cause I've never read that anywhere.
