I live in Alberta Canada and we are always advised to return un-used or expired oral medications to our local pharmacy and to NEVER flush them down the toilet as it contaminates our drinking water, yet whenever I watch the Dr. Oz show he's always telling people to flush their meds down the toilet and I cannot for the life of me understand why in this day and age any doctor would suggest that....can anyone shed some light?

i'd like to assume he's talking figuratively, not literally -
but ya, that's kinda dopeish to be saying that -
can't trust anything you hear on tv - or a man wearing women's clothes
so what do you think of brucelyn ????

We were told the same thing about
the dangers of flushing medicine here in south Florida. To give him the benefit of the doubt maybe he was not speaking literally??
On a slightly related note, in my 23 And Me genetic report, Dr. Oz was the celebrity who came from the same ancient maternal line as me. I didn't even know who dr oz was. I had to google him.

Um, no, I think he means it literally cuz he says it often and if he doesn't mean it literally then he should be more careful about
his choice of words and be clear that the proper way to dispose of them is taking them to a pharmacy for proper disposal...I just assumed that there was no regulation in the US about
that which kinda floors me.
I'd rather not voice my opinion on the matter of Bruce lol, I don't understand it because I've never experienced it in my life (for myself or anyone I've ever known) so I don't want to judge or support something I just can't wrap my head around.

If it days "Dr. Oz" on it drop it quickly and run away
He was an excellent doctor but unfortunate money and fame got to him and he endorses many things that are very bad and detrimental to ones health so that he can make money.
That being said for medication disposal ask your pharmacy what to do with your leftover drugs. I know there are some shelters that recycle them and give them to patients who cannot afford them.

So what does the pharmacy do with the pills I wonder? Put them on a rocket and send them into the sun? Put them with medical waste to be burned, so then it goes into the atmosphere to rain back down? Bury it so it can slowly leak into underground water supply? I really don't know but I seriously doubt the amount people would flush down their toilet wouldn't even equate to a drop of water into the supply, especially once you think of all the other hard metals and toxins that seep into our water supply naturally and the amount of toxic waste that industry dumps into rivers is a much bigger concern in my eyes.
So my guess is, Dr. Oz is serious about
flushing them, maybe it isn't what others say but maybe he just figures it really is an overblown issue to actually return them and the minute damage to water it does pales against the real issues facing water supplies for humans.

From what I know, they found high amounts of antibiotics or something in our water system decades ago and that's when they started implementing the no flush advise, they found kids were reaching puberty way too early and research seemed to have connected it to what was in our water supply (something along those lines anyway, It was a long time ago and I barely remember most of what happened last week in my life hahahaha). I just find it weird that any doc would make the suggestion to flush your meds in this day and age based on a lot of research about
the negative effects of doing so.

The only reason I ever remember hearing about
why kids hit puberty early is solely due to hormones they pump up chickens and cows with, which sounds way more plausible to me, I'm not being argumentative I just find that type of study a little skewed sounding to me to blame that on the water when our food is so full of hormones and steroids.

Yeah Bad Gut, who knows but apparently studies done on our drinking water where I live showed high levels of hormones/antibiotics in our water supply so they linked it to that. Where I live because it's against the law for the farming industry to inject any of our meat for consumption with hormones and antibiotics and other junk that is allowed in the states, so I guess that's why it was also linked to our water supply.

And now thinking this through a little more, do antibotics breakdown in the body? Or do we actually end up peeing or pooping them out in the same form, which would also be the same as flushing them? I wonder this because I know a lot of drugs like Acid, mushrooms don't change in the body and you actually pee out the drug in the same molecule structure that you put them in your body, technically making them a great drug to recycle if you had the knowledge to isolate them in your urine.

They incinerate them... burn at high temp.
And we end up peeing or pooping out a fairly large percentage of antibiotics in active form.
If I can find it I'll post it, but caffeine and something else (antibiotics I assume) are the number one water contaminant's in most areas in North America concentration or parts per million/billion wise found in large nation wide surveys. Even up here in Canada.
In nature, sunlight is responsible for breaking down EDC's (Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals) and such, so levels get quite high in the spring during low light and snow melt, and up in Canada I believe underwater well supplies in rural area these things get concentrated to really high levels from agriculture.
I assume lot's of drugs and such can be found in all water - but caffeine surprised me.

I can't find it - In any case I'm sure there's a ton of crap in the water that would surprise us aside from meds. Like gut bacteria studies I'm sure findings also vary quite considerably as to what is the worst and highest. Either way I try no to drink tap or well water anymore without filtration.
However I'm quite shocked Dr. Oz would tell people to "flush" their meds... That's crazy. Everyone I know takes them to the pharmacy as they properly (hopefully) dispose of them for free.

Bad Gut said...
So what does the pharmacy do with the pills I wonder?
I believe (like illegal drugs) they are incinerated in special EPA approved incinerators.

I assume he is just not thinking when he says to "flush" - his message is about
using alternatives and getting rid of prescript
ions. so he could have just as easily said "toss" or "scrap".
The man's intent is not to advise on medication disposal.
I don't like him. But it does help to put statments in context if yo are trying to understand things like this.

Yeah you're not supposed to flush them and I'm surprised he would suggest that. Personally I think Dr. Oz is a bit of a quack and cares too much about
money and endorsements now than helping people. A lady I know watched him one day and he recommended some vitamin (can't remember the name) to help with memory. She was older and noticed her mind slipping so she thought she'd try them. Within a week her blood pressure skyrocketed and she felt like her heart was going to explode out of her chest. She went to her doctor and he was like "yeah it's those vitamins. Stop taking them." She should have consulted her doctor before trying them anyways, but still. You hear a doctor endorse something on TV you assume it's safe for the most part.
