C-Diff and flare at the same time

hey ya'll,

so I was out of commission for a whole month and it turned out to be C-Diff. The doctor was surprised because she said that my symptoms were severe but didn't fully fit the bill for C-Diff. It took 3 WEEKS to even test for it! I was on Vanco for 14 days taking it every 6 hours. My sed rate was also elevated so they put me on Endocort (which I have had previous bad experiences with it, but it's a set 9 weeks this time. no longer!)

I had scopes scheduled for the last week of June but they said I would infect the hospital so they were postponed. They are now scheduled for September 1. I am retesting for C-Diff tomorrow.

I also have a surgery scheduled in August for endometriosis removal but it's an exploratory surgery that we planned when we still didn't know what was making me so sick so I don't know if I should go through with the surgery or not.

I just don't know what's going on with my body. My white cells never elevated throughout the whole time I was sick. I had a fever for a month straight but my body wasn't fighting the infection! the head sores are back with a vengance.

what is the c diff smell because i keep saying my stools smell horrible lately

i would definitely wait on the surgery. that sounds like a nightmare since you are just recovering from c diff.

my wbc were ALWAYS INSANELY ELEVATED when i had c diff but they get elevated during UC and appendicitis flares, too. sed rate is also high.

are you on probiotics right now? i have been committed to taking them DAILY instead of when i feel like it. i can't risk c diff growing in my gut again so i take probiotics daily- food and supplements- to keep it in check. it's all about preventing it as much as you can.

...so two weeks off antibiotics and I STILL HAVE CDIFF! I'm now on Dificid. this is not fun! I'm back at work but probably shouldn't be...

has anyone taken Dificid? Did it work well? it's an expensive med: $70 for the two pills I picked up yesterday. I'm picking up the rest tonight.

nope. usual meds, endocort, the antibiotic, and the probiotic. just letting things go because i was afraid the virus would get stuck if i took immodium.

yeah, the doctor told me to take the probiotic because the antibiotic is killing all of the bacteria and we need to help my gut along. I hope the Dificid has less side effects than the vanco... that was rough!

Are you taking Florastor? There are studies showing four per day, spaced apart, can help resolve the c-diff in combination with your medication. Now every time I have to take an antibiotic, I take four Florastor per day to avoid a relapse. It has worked for me everytime.

That sounds really tough

I had three bouts of CDIFF in three months. The smell and urgency is indescribable. You could be one foot in front of the toilet and not make it in time! CDIFF was probably the worst thing I've ever experienced. I did the normal course of treatment Flagyl and Vanco while hospitalized. Those meds killed it the first time but it came back in a few weeks. The next hospitalization they put me on Dificid and it did not do anything. Thank the lord my copay was only $45. The only thing that cured me of CDIFF was FMT. My sister was my donor. I understand the "ICK" factor but it really was no big deal for me. It was harder for my sister than me.

Since I had my Jpouch surgeries I have not had CDIFF. I feel for those that are fighting it as it truly is the worst.

Hi...CRAP...this totally sucks for you having it continue. The fmt is a good suggestion.
Maybe ask the doc to consider it.
Is anyone else in the family being checked as well?

I don't know, but I'm wondering if a steroid could be contraindicated in this situation....? Anyone know?

What probiotics are you taking?

Lastly....I'd also suggest you take fibre supps to help sweep out some of the infection and to help feed the probiotics.

I saw a documentary about fecal transplantation, they stick a tube down the patients nasal passage and administer it that way....bet having it going in your butt sounds better now eh lol!!

Other methods which have been successfully used elsewhere (and which may be considered in select patient cases) include fecal enemas and infusion through a nasogastric (nasal) tube into the upper part of your GI tract.

Fecal transplant is nothing new as it has been around since the 1950's... It is used to treat multi-drug resistant clostridium dificile infection by replacing the "bad" gut bacteria with normal "good" bacteria. However, what is new is the fact that such fecal transplantation is being administered through the nose using a tube threaded into the small bowel. [Thanks to @GuildfordENT who brought this to my attention!]

Historically, such fecal transplantation (aka fecal bacteriotherapy) was performed via multiple infusions via enema (uncomfortable for both the physician as well as the patient) or via colonoscope. Although first described being done in humans in 1958, it was never really seriously studied until the mid-1980's. Even before humans, it had been performed in animals by veterinarians for centuries.

In any case, there has been new literature supporting the use of nasoduodenal tubes to administer poop via the nose. With nasoduodenal tubes, a tube is threaded through the nose, past the stomach, and into the small bowel.

Now keep in mind that the stool actually NEVER comes into contact with the nose. It is contained within an impermeable tube at all times, so it is not quite as gross as you might think (though mentally, there may still be an emotional ick factor present).

Another approach being considered is encapsulating the poop inside enteric-coated capsules so a patient can theoretically swallow the pill-containing poop.
