So I'm one of those unlucky few with an IBD that is highly prone to skin rashes, infections etc. I had a boil develop on my inner thigh near my lady parts little over two weeks ago. I've had boils in the past and they always ruptured on their own. Not this one. It was starting to go away but then it came back with a vengeance a few days ago. It was hurting, burning and itching like crazy so I went to urgent care today. I guess it was more complex then I thought. They weren't able to get all of it - something about
the second half wasn't forming a pocket or something like that? But they were able to drain about
1cc out of it. So now I'm left with a hole about
the size of a pea plus I'm on antibiotics. But their sending a culture out to make sure I'm on the right antibiotic to treat it. They put me on Keflex.
anyway, my question is: has anyone had a boil that was drained and how long did it take for it to clear up on you?

Can't comment on boil surgery, but I know from personal experience that Keflex is hard on the gut-- so I'd advise you to get 30 days worth of Culturelle (capsule probiotic). It also protects against C-diff, according to recent research. / Old Hat (34 yrs with left-sided UC; presently in remission taking brandname Colazal)

Yeah, I was on Keflex after my bunionectomy a few years ago and my gut didn't like it one bit. But I was hoping that now I'm in 100% clinical remission (microscopically and visually) that it won't bother me as much.
It just gets so frustrating, I know that we are supposed to stay away from the 'cillian's and 'cycline's so what else is there for us? I have a staph infection - which one..I don't know yet. I had a bout of food poisoning a few months ago, they gave me Cipro, I thought I was dying because it affected me so much. Agh!
So if anyone has any suggestions, please share!
Btw OH, I can't do Culterelle. I guess it's the wrong strains for me. I tried it not too long ago and also Align.

I have crohn's not UC but I had chronic perianal absesses, they always went away once drained.
Then I had abscesses in both arm pits, they only went away with dietary changes.
Now I'm getting boils on my face. Some went away with repeat draining using hydracolloid bandages to
open them, but i have one stubborn one that hasn't responded to draining, essential oils, DMSO, and doesn't seem to fluctuate with dietary changes.
They've NEVER responded to antibiotics though. I think I've been on cipro, flagyl, bactrim and doxy. Bactrim on double dose for one week only brought the arm pits down a little, then they came back.
Crohn's has been linked to hydradenitis supurativa though.

Thanks instant :) I can't take Bactrim as I'm highly allergic to sulfa. But about
how long does it take to get over a drainage? Have you ever healed from a first time draining?
Edited to add: about
how long does it take to heal from a drain? A day, two days...3?

I've had a boil in about
the same place you're describing and it went away after one drainage. I also took an antibiotic but can't remember which one. By the way I have UC too.

Mine always went away after one drainage. Time to heal varied by size of them. You need enough time for all the fluids to drains before it can scab over.

Thanks :)
I'm just hoping that it will be healed or mostly healed by next weekend because I am going to a huge bikers rally. I'm not riding tho - I'm hauling a trailer. So cross those fingers for me!

So sorry you have staph in that boil. I needed to take Cipro for staph (head-to-toe rash) in 1990s & it messed up my colon bigtime, ugh. So definitely take care of yourself. / Old Hat (34 yrs with left-sided UC; presently in remission taking brandname Colazal)

Ugh, I feel terrible for you. I had one while pregnant that had to be
opened. I can recommend a good antibiotic-free topical that you can try at the first sign of one...it's 3rd Rock RashBlock. (a silver ointment) I use it wherever I have compromised skin to avoid infections. So far, so good. Wish I would have had it a couple of months ago.

I was put on Keflex before and I didn't take it. I waited until I had my results back and took the other antibiotic they gave me.
