I ate some ground sunflower seeds without the shells and had diarrhea. Is this a normal reaction?

Nuts are very hard on the digestive system, so the answer is yes. Some can eat but I believe most can not. It is a shame because I love nuts of all kinds and have difficulty every time I have a weak moment.

something that happens once is not always related. It is possible you do not tolerate sunflower seeds but it is also possible it was totally unrelated. You would need to wait a few days and try it again - if it is same result, then maybe. UC can give you various symptoms at various times for various reasons, in my opinion it is not as simple as a=b.
Are sunflower seeds the only thing you ate that day? so many things can affect soft, loose stools, hydration, combination of foods, lack of sleep, stress, nerves, inflammation, meds (prescript
ion and over the counter) .
Unless you try it several times (eat sunflower seeds) and get the same result each and every time.. then you can't really say it is the cause in my opinion.
I'm not just saying this cause I like and eat sunflower seeds myself - I'd give the same argument for any food, action, medication that one would feels has a direct cause and effect.

Canadagal makes a very excellent point. I think way too many here avoid foods because they have had a bad problem one time and blame an item without a fair trial. I have done this many times having a problem with a food one day and then turn around and eating the very same thing the very next day and not had a problem at all. Sometimes it is a combination of things that was the real problem and not really that one item. Unfortunately, in my case, I have a problem any time I eat any kind of nuts. Bummer because I love nuts.

Are you sure its only Sunflower seeds? What else did you eat in last 48 hours?
I do not have any issues with tree nuts. Actually, my morning breakfast is home made granola which is loaded with all kind of tree nuts (including sunflower seeds and pumpkin seeds).

Thanks for the advice. I am going to try ground sunflower seeds again because it's delicious in my smoothie and supposedly has antiinflammatory properties. I thought it was maybe broccoli, but broccoli has worked out fine in my smoothies repeatedly.
this is great advice. I've been gone a week, sorry I haven't responded.

Try sunbutter, ideally pure. Even that flares me, though.

I used to be able to eat sunflower and pumpkin seeds shell and all. Now, if I tried to eat them that way I might as well be eating shards of glass or stiff-bristled brushes.
As long as they're shelled though, I have zero issues.

I can only eat the butter. The seeds are way too harsh for me. (Corn is also lethal)
Have you tried sesame seed butter? It is delicious in smoothies and a great source of iron.
