alcohol and UC

I am enjoying a cold session IPA as I type this. I frequently enjoy cocktail hour, perhaps more often than I should.

I have zero problems with alcoholic beverages when I am not in a flare. When flaring, I consume alcohol in moderation. It doesn't exacerbate the severity of my flares, but it does cause me to have more overall discomfort during BMs.

I am lucky, I suppose.

When I am flaring alcohol tends to make me go to the bathroom more the next day but I don't really have issues with alcohol. However, I am careful what I drink. I don't have problems with vodka drinks but all others just make me cramp. Certain malt beverage bother since I'm slightly allergic to something in those drinks - I get a tightness in my chest and my nose stuffs up.

It used to suppress my immune system. Things got a lot worse when I quit drinking. Last flare was a holiday flare when I decided it was ok to abandon my food protocol and drink/watch football. That did not end well so I have no interest in rolling the dice again. Besides booze makes it hard to stay in shape which only gets harder as we get older.

Safest tipple if you like it is whiskey. Even the very strict SCD Diet allows that. If it's a good whiskey, I drink it straight with some ice. Otherwise, I'll mix with sparkling water.

I drink a couple 500ml cans of German beer after work most evenings. Warsteiner, Holsten, DAB..

The German purity law only allows beer to contain water, malt, and hops. Nothing else.

Alot of domestic beers and especially cheap wines and coolers contain high sulphites, which aren't good for us.

Good to know that you all have not had a problem with alcohol.
I heard that when taking pred you should stay off it.
Anyone on pred and have alcohol?
MAYBE I will try it.
I miss my "cocktail hour" each evening and sometimes have wine with dinner.
We'll be taking a cruise where alcohol is included and even in our cabin. So, I will try having wine before we leave just to see what happens.
Also, miss my regular coffee in the morning. I was told to have only decaf coffee and/or tea.

Oh wow. Can't imagine a drunk prednisone psycho on the loose.

I stay away from anything sweet or processed when I'm flaring, buy dry wine or a vodka soda actually makes me feel better (mild pain killer, helps with spasms). Never more than 2, particularly when I'm on steroids.

We were on vacation a few years go and I was on pred, coming off of a flare. We went on a sunset wine cruise and the wine and pred did not mix well for me! Hahahaha- I was definitely a crazed psycho. My poor husband- surprised he didn't throw me off of the boat.

I'm not in a bad flare and it seems to be easing.....no running to the bathroom and little blood. The pred seems to be working....also taking Apriso.
Having read all these comments I see mixed experiences with alcohol. I'm a little nervous about having wine while on pred. Will be on it for at least a month more...need to ease off it. I'm on 20mg now.
Yes, I DO miss having regular coffee, too.
I've eased up on my diet. Foods don't seem to be a problem....maybe Tex-Mex is a problem, though. Staying away from fried foods and salads.
UC is "the pits"!

There are some studies that suggest consuming alcohol frequently shortens remission times for IBD patients. Occasional drinking should be fine. Just go easy. I've cut way back from 2-3 drinks of scotch a night to just one or two drinks a week. I think excessive alcohol consumption had something to do with my first flare. I've also read alcohol has some sort of negative effect on the mucous in your digestive system. Nothing wrong with enjoying yourself though and a good buzz helps you forget about your disease for a while. Have fun!

I drink too much wine! Tonight none, but a couple glasses a night. The other day I over did it and vomited with D the next day. Felt like a hangover, horrible. Like 4 glasses of wine! Way too much. I think too much of a good thing. I am teatering right now so it was really stupid! Just be smarter than me I guess!
