Hi all,
I am having MAJOR loss of appetite issues which in turn is making me lose way too much weight and making me feel sick to my stomach and lightheaded. I believe the culprit is the 6MP I have been taking since May. I had a flex sig done while I was in the hospital in May and the doctor just did another one last week and nothing has changed at all. It is still severe. So now I am back on prednisone 25 days before my wedding and I am miserable, but I think I am mostly miserable because of the 6MP. I think I want to get off of it completely. Did anyone have any issues with 6MP?

Sorry things aren't going so well. Maybe you should try biologics (remicade, humira, simponi, entvyio)? That's usually the next step. Prednisone isn't a longterm treatment plan, you'll need something that works.

I've already been on remicade (developed an allergy to it), am on simponi right now, been on it for about
three months. So far is not working.

Hmm severe inflammation, and you've tried biologics for 3 months and 6mp as well... Well, you have the option of another biologic (maybe remicade or entvyio). You might just be a nonresponder to all uc medications as well (a small percentage of patients are) and that would leave you with surgery as the best path. It's yet another treatment that's given many their lives back. Those are my thoughts, see what others have to say...

Thanks for your thoughts....my doctor has mentioned surgery but said that if I did that I would not be able to have children :( I'd like to have some one day and I know my fiancé would be really upset if we couldn't have kids. A lot of things to think about

The 6MP made me sick also and caused me to lose more weight
Since being on Entyvio I have gained 15 LBs
It takes a while to work
I have been on Entvio for 9 months now
Get an infusion every 8 weeks

Your doctor is incorrect. While surgery may make it more difficult to conceive (especially if it is
open vs laparoscopic), many women have had successful pregnancies after j-pouch surgery.

I dont know but I havent lost an ounce on 6mp! I think its just the inflamation and all meds combined.
Have you changed what you eat as well as how much? I think try every thing you can before surgery.

Surgey doesn't cause you to be infertile, it does however make the chances of conceiving lower. They do take precautions during surgery to try to keep things working properly but from what i've heard it's definitely harder to get pregnant. I've also heard of men having impotence after surgery, that is also a low chance but it's possible. Neither sex is safe from potential problems conceiving. I never wanted children so I didn't care about
that element. You could store eggs/sperm for future use, just in case you had trouble getting pregnant. There are so many options for having children these days, i find it difficult to believe that there wouldn't be options for you. If the surgeon told you that, you should see someone else, that's flat out incorrect.

I think you can switch to using Azathioprene (Imunran) rather than 6-MP if you feel you are having issues with it. Maybe ask your GI about
this option. If I recall you can go both ways between the two depending on the side effects your having from one or the other. Though you might not want to try this so close to your wedding.
