Everything certainly is relative. But comparing ones own suffering to that of others is pointless, as your own suffering is only relative to your own life experience and no-one elses. Telling stories about how it "could be worse" isn't helpful at all and I'm surprised that someone with UC is giving another person with UC this kind of advice.
Fully agreed. I'm not insensible to other people's sufferings - I'm really not - but guilt-tripping just leaves me cold. It isn't a competition. Otherwise, we should be telling IBS sufferers to buck up and get on with it because it could be UC instead. And, indeed, the whole of the western world should be skipping around with joy in comparison to the citizens of poorer countries.

Yes they might not be as motivated because they make money on maintnence meds... But in a few years there will be more generic versions of mesalamines.
"Not as motivated" is the key phrase. They're not motivated to look for the root causes of IBD, because there's no money in going down that route - they'd rather produce new drugs instead. Heck, a staid GI who looked close to retirement age told me this a few years ago. He said that there hadn't been much research done into the causes of IBD; the main focus had been on developing drugs.
PS: Generic mesalazine was around 15 years ago. I know, 'cos the NHS kept on prescribing me it.
