Humira or Remicade?

I was diagnosed with Pancolitis in May, 2014. I was in remission from July 2014 thru April, 2015 taking Asacol. I developed nerve issue in early Jan, 2015 and Neurologist advised me to get off Asacol in April, 2015 that caused me to flare in May, 2015. I started Aza in May, 2015 instead of Asacol. I was on Aza for 4 weeks and Neurologist decided that the nerve issue is not related to Asacol and went back to maximum dose of Asacol. Then tried Ulceris and it did not work. One month ago, GI put me on Pred started at 60mg for 10 days, then tapper to 50mg for 2 weeks and now 40mg for past 2-3 weeks. I do not see any improvements. Still bleeding and 7-8 watery bm a day. Just called GI and he is recommending Humira or Remicade. I have been using rectal enemas too some days Hydrocortisone and some days Mesalamine. Please help me to decide what should be my next steps?

Check with your insurance to see what each will cost you. Often their covered under injectable medications and/or specialty pharmacy. Remicade is often given at a hospital and is subject to more costs, higher caps and copays in some policies. Use their specialty pharmacy and it's cheaper (rather than direct billing).

Both have a patient assistance program that helps with copay cost.

Remicade is painless other then a small needle prick when the nurse sets the IV. Humira is a self subcutaneous (just below the skin) injection, a nuse shows you how. It's given in the thigh, belly or other meaty area. Some say it hurts, others not so much. It might depend on whether you have much body fat (flaring makes us loose weight rapidly).

Remicade seems to have a better track record of success among UC patients. My GI gave me the choice between the two but encouraged me toward the Remicade. It didn't help me (and I chose not to bother with humira after that) but many people have had great results from it. Good luck with whichever one you go with.
