I've been getting a lot of annoying pop-up ads when on the HW site, just within the last week or so, what's up with that?

I guess they need something to support the costs of running the site

Site admin is currently testing out new ad formats, a test that should be over by the end of the month. It's undecided whether this or some other format will be chosen. Healingwell uses ads to pay the bills.
I, personally, don't like the new format.

You can always help by donating directly -- see the DONATE button in the second line of options at the top of the page.

It's really bad on my cell phone, huge ad, then the forum gets huge and I can't control the size.
As Lynnwood said, you can help support the site through donations. I guess if we had enough donations we wouldn't need the crazy pop-ups :(

Guess we're all getting them. Also my screen fluctuates between normal size and reduced size over the last week and I have to keep refreshing it to get the font back to normal.

Um I would donate so much because this site means so much to me. Unfortunately I cannot right now, but in a few years I sure will!

I use the site much less now since the pop-up ads were added to the site. Makes me want to get an ad-blocker for my phone.

Thanks for the reminder to donate. I just did it via PayPal and it took 20 seconds. Anyone else who's able to contribute - please donate, too.
This site has given me the most useful UC advice I've ever gotten. so I was happy to donate half the amount I pay as a copay every time I see my GI.
Donate if you can! If half of us sent in $5 each, the popups could probably go away.

Well I don't have a lot to spare either but Kiptyn's post inspired me. $5, I can spare $5. Actually I donated $10 so one other person who just can't swing even $5, I got you covered!

These ads are really annoying. I wish we could turn them off. I think it changes the whole experience of engaging with each other and our posts. I understand the rationale -- Just saying....

It's quite annoying on a mobile phone - if you zoom in too early, you can't close the ad anymore.
How about
a mobile version of this website btw? That should be quite easy to do (as this seems to be mostly standard forum software).

Oh, man! Does this mean HW is struggling? That's how I take this. And I really didn't like the line
"Donate if you can! If half of us sent in $5 each, the popups could probably go away."
I don't like the word "probably," sorry, it's nothing you did wrong, it just kinda makes me want to rip out my hair.

The rationale of using those types of popups to get money only works to tick off users....lol.

All I know is healingwell is trying out a new ad format, a test that'll last until the end of the month. Whether the new ad format stays or goes is undetermined (up to admin). I don't think anybody really likes the new format, from what I've seen. We've been keeping admin aware of complaints about
the new format, so that's factored into his ultimate decision.
I believe all lynwood and notsosicklygirl were saying is don't forget that healingwell has a donate option. I'm sure it's appreciated when donations do come in. However, there's currently no campaign going to drive anyone to donate (lol we're not npr public radio or pbs television that do), and there's most certainly no dire concequences if we dont donate. We all donate our time by answering questions and helping out others with their concerns and I feel that's the more important thing.
Cheers,

I donated $100 once and didn't even get acknowledgement .... I didn't know even if it was received. Haven't donated since.

It would be nice to know who or what receives any donated monies and what are the costs associated with running this site.
And ya, if there is no acknowledgment of a donation, the incentive to repeat would be significantly less.

I don't think the costs of running the site are what one would need to know....but acknowledgement of receipt sure would be. Respectfully.....

I wonder why the donations are not tax deductible? I think it would be good to have the site registered as a charitable organization so donations are tax deductible. I imagine that would give people more incentive to donate. That would also ensure people receive a receipt and maybe a thank you note.

I'm sorry, you're right, iPoop. I promise I didn't assume this was just a gimmick to generate money by the website.
Maybe they could start some type of thread that acknowledges those who have donated.
I am a little upset because the most recent ad that popped up really messed me up. I was literally typing a response and this reply box was only picking up every other letter I was typing. I don't have the fastest internet in the world but it's not too bad, either.
Here's hoping the new ad test fails! No offense, HW.

The mods are reaching out to admin about
users not getting an email after donating. Seems weird... A thank you is a definite must

Some of these desktop popup ads have sound with them...errrr.
The mobile ads are obnoxiously large, take up the whole screen and are a PITA to close.
