serrated polyp, anyone?

So.. I had my periodic routine colonoscopy last week and except for some mild inflammation in the sigmoid, it all looked ok visually to the GI. He called today to say that in the sigmoid there was apparently a serrated polyp.

He said there is not very much "in the literature" about a serrated polyp in combination with long-term UC. He would like to do another colonoscopy fairly soon (within the next few months) and do chromoendoscopy and also take lots more biopsies, especially from that area. (He said he took about 35 last week and next time he would take about 100.)

So.....has anyone else had a serrated polyp?

Yes I have had quite a few. Mine are hard to get at he said and very large. The colonoscopy took 1.5 hours. Most doctors do surgery but my doctor is specially trained to do it that way. The biopsies came back benign but I have to be monitored closely.

Apparently the jury is still out, but a serrated polyp in a patient with long standing UC could be a precursor to colon cancer. It is wise for your GI to check closely. Good luck. See http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/826292_4

Hi, thanks, lea and zen. He had mentioned that the colonoscopy would take longer than usual, and of course the reason he is doing all this is because of the cancer association.

Lea, "monitored closely" - frequent scopings? How frequent?

@songlady At least once a year, apparently mine grow faster than most (lucky me). I don't really mind because it does put my mind at ease, however I have had a lot of funky things happening (blood, diverticulitis, low bp, medication intolerances etc).

I've never heard the term serrated. I had a polyp removed and won't get the results till Nov 9...so don't know what mine is.
What ticked me off is that the new gastro only took 5 biopsies throughout compared to the 30 - 36 my other one took.

I think for you the initial baseline of the soon-to-be c-scope is the best thing to do and go from there.

Only 5 biopsies? Wow! Is he following some new research study to back this up? I would be curious.

My former GI, years ago, took about 50 each time after the incident in which he found an adenoma (about 23 years ago.) This "new" GI (I've been with him about 5 years now; he told me after my recent scoping "I feel as if I really know your colon now!") tends to take 30-35ish.

I had a crazy week at work, and his office did not call me as he had indicated; I will call them Monday and schedule this - scope. I am thinking it would be prudent to have a window of a few easy days after, given the length of the procedure and number of biopsies.

Strangely enough, about 12 yrs ago I had a serrated polyp grow out of the gum where my lower right wisdom tooth was extracted over 40 yrs beforehand. The oral surgeon removed polyp, stitched, & had it biopsied. Rather a weird experience-- so now I know that it can also happen in the colon. Good luck with your follow-thru, Songlady. Definitely be kind to yourself RE allowing downtime. / Old Hat (35 yrs with left-sided UC; presently in remission taking brandname Colazal)

songlady....I haven't seen my GI since the scope, and he waited for the results from the MRCP as well before me going to see him.

I'll definitely have a talk about the only 5 biopsies decision. Maybe because my inflammation isn't throughout or has never been past the sigmoid....but still, seeing a polyp removal and pseudopolyps was an eye opener, even through the drugs. Time to think has made it a bit more stressful adding to the fact he's new for me.

Let us know about the next scope date, etc.

Weird about polyps that they can grow anywhere. OH...Interesting about it popping up from your wisdom tooth extraction site.
