Diarrhea after colonoscopy?

Has anybody had worse diarrhea after their colonoscopy? I've barely eaten a thing since my test yesterday morning, just some crackers mostly and a lot of water, and I am running to the bathroom like I did the prep. I'm having just liquid come out for the most part. I don't remember ever having this issue in all the tests I've had. I've still got tons of air in me too, which sometimes comes out with the BM, but hasn't come out at all on it's own. I can barely walk around the air is so bad.

Anybody else have this? Is this normal? My GI was going to call me today so I'll see what he says as well.

After my last scope I was surprised that I had a couple movements that were still mostly just the prep, but withing 24-48 hours I was back to normal. The air will probably come out when you start having normal BMs again. You should try to eat a regular meal to get things working properly.

I even tried eating toast and I'm just not hungry yet. I was thinking though of starting up on my fiber supplement again, I assume that would help? May help bulk things up again.

Were you having problems before your colonoscopy? A colonoscopy definitely stirs up things in there so it could be just a side effect of the colonoscopy, but you definitely need to check with your doctor. I typically have heightened problems after a colonoscopy, but not as severe as what you're experiencing, but I have been in remission since 2007.

The day before (before I did the prep) I was having some diarrhea. Before that I was having formed movements, small but formed and only once or twice a day. I was in remission. The test only showed mild inflammation in the sigmoid colon, and everything else looked fine. I'm really hoping this is the effect of not eating for so long, and all that air in me. I'll have to try to eat something more than crackers today and see what that does to me. I've got a few sores on my bottom, so I was looking forward to not having to have a BM for awhile after the test, so much for that!

Try things like barley and oatmeal to bulk up your stools

You should start eating...maybe boiled egg for protein and toast.
Take the fibre supplement with your meals.

You're flaring considering the inflammation...hopefully you're back to the nightly enemas.

You should ask your doctor for an antispasmodic to relieve the hissy fits that are happening in there after the scope. Try ginger tea or other gas-reducing products...your doc would help with that suggestion.

The gas can last a day or two after a scope...but since you're flaring it might be both. Eating can help slow things down a bit (by digestion in general rather than having nothing).

You can try a manual massage from the lower right hip bone up to the ribcage, across under the ribcage, down to the left hip bone and across to the pubic bone. That will help move the gas out.

Let us know how your call to the doc went.

The doc didn't say I was flaring, as he didn't tell me to take any Prednisone or anything to stop. I was having formed BMs before all this. I'm not having any bleeding either (other than right after the test from the biopsies). Can you flare without any bleeding? I'll have to ask him when he calls if he thinks I'm having a flare, but in my appointment he didn't mention that. I'm definitely having some bad cramping though when I have to go to the bathroom, reminiscent of a flare. But still no blood.

Doc hasn't called yet, hopefully he will remember to! I didn't think he worked on Fridays actually so I'll have to call around 2pm if I don't hear from him.

You are flaring...that's what inflammation means. It's a matter of degrees and what your doctor's criteria is. It doesn't change the reality that today him saying NO won't be yes tomorrow.
I'd be somewhat fearful if your doctor doesn't say you are flaring. Ask bluntly.

I rarely bleed with a flare anymore, and haven't waited for that symptom to appear for at least 23 years.

You're still on the nightly enemas? and have been since when?
4g?

The good part....very mild visually.

Let us know what the doc says.

After my last sigmoid, I had D for a couple days and I didn't even do a prep! Nor did I have any symptoms prior to the scope.

My GI called, he doesn't think I'm having a flare as he said everything in my colon looked good. He said I had a little inflammation right inside the rectum but he thinks that is the fissure. He said it's possible some of that prep was still in my small bowel and that's what's coming out now. Told me if I don't feel like eating, then I don't have to, just keep drinking plenty of liquids. He said he thinks it should get better, and it's a good sign I'm having BMs even if liquid as it means my colon is functioning again (yesterday he had told me that anesthesia puts your colon 'to sleep' so it takes awhile for it to wake back up again).

So we'll see, he said he wouldn't take anything other than extra strength Tylenol for pain right now. And to wait on the fiber as it can be harsh on your gut.

So you have a fissure. At least you know what it is.

You mentioned inflammation in sigmoid....?...which I would assume rectum and sigmoid. Now he says only rectum?

It's possible that you still have your digestive tract reacting to the prep....I've only used the gallon prep and didn't have diarrhea afterward unless flaring is more marked. I do, however, have bleeding and mucus stuff for a few days between bms. They're definitely more soft or loose.

Are you still on the enemas?

Hope tomorrow you feel much better and able to resume with some food.

Rest and let your fingers get good exercise from the remote control :-)

He said very mild inflammation, unless he said irritation. I was pretty sick when he was talking to me in his office, I was actually lying down. He had said yesterday there was a little inflammation near the end too - so that must be the fissure.

I am still taking the enemas - haven't the past 2 nights however. The night of the prep, well it's almost impossible to keep it in. Then last night I wouldn't have kept it in either with all the gas. Hoping tonight I can if some of this gas would just go away. I definitely plan to spend the night in bed watching tv!

Now I have a fever of 100.1. A few hours ago it was 97.6. Is this normal? I'm trying to call my dr office but they don't seem to have an after hours number.

What prep did you take? My last colonoscopy the Dr. Gave me Surprep- and I had diahrrea for a few days after.

I'm back home from the hospital. My BMs are about 2-3 times a day, slightly formed now! Still very small but formed. And a lot of gas but I think the gas from the scope finally got out of me a day or two ago. The GI physician's assistant at the hospital gave me Prednisone but she did the tapering all wrong. I have some old pills from a few years ago, I'll have to use those since she did not give me enough for a proper taper. This young GI assistants - I swear they just look at the book they had in college and use a '1 size fits all' for UC. It doesn't work that way.

Well they had me on 40mg in the hospital (overkill I think since stool test showed no blood in my stool at all). I took that for 2 days then yesterday told them to drop me to 30mg. Went down to 20mg today. She has me taking that for 5 days then drop to 10mg. That seems like way too big of a drop to me - should be in 5mg increments. I'd much rather go down to 15mg, then to 10mg, then to 5mg. My regular GI is out of the country this week, so I can't ask him advice until next week. But I know he'd say to go down in 5mg increments.

They weren't even sure I was having a flare up in the hospital, since my scope showed no sign of that. They weren't the best GI docs there, but the internal medicine doc really didn't even think I needed to be on Pred, and she seemed really good (and the nursing staff said she was good as well).
