I don't have C-Diff but I DO have ulcerative colitis, and just had a recent hysterectomy for uterine cancer.
My mom is dying at 92 years young. She lives with my sister and hospice is there now. They are bleaching down everything they touch.
My doctor tells me I am highly susceptible to infection and that I should STAY AWAY REGARDLESS!
My GI SUGGESTED I speak to my mom by phone and say my goodbyes from home or pursue FaceTime rather than put myself in a precarious situation. My mom has dementia and has not spoken for a year plus!
I feel as though I should be there with my brothers and sister but am scared for my health. Can C-diff be so powerful if everything has been washed down?

Go say goodbye to your mother! Yea cdiff is nasty and we with UC can easily get it but it's not the end of the world. But there are preventative measures: gloves and a gown while you are at the hospice, obviously wash your hands after touching anything, probably wouldn't eat anything, take double dose of strong probiotics for at least a few weeks (I recommend florastor). Come home, wash whatever clothes you wore there in bleach, take a shower, and feel better that you were able to see your mother.

I take a probiotic called ultimate flora 50 billion. Do you think that would be enough?
I wanted to stay with my sister a month after mom passes for comfort and support and the both docs say no way!
What a choice! I can't believe this!
My poor mom! She got the Cdiff from taking too many antibiotics
for several bladder infections. I hope she isn't suffering. With the dementia she can't even tell us if she is in pain....

When my Father died some 12 years ago there was MRSA in the hospital and he ended up with it too. Different risks I appreciate but despite that nothing would keep me away - he was dying - he was unconscious for the last week - But he was still my Dad and the last chance I had to ever be with him. Go see your Mum...

Go see your mom. There is a cure for C diff called fecal microbiota transplant. Look it up it has a 93% cure rate for C diff

Are you on chemotherapy or any immunosuppressants for UC?

I second the suggestion to start taking Florastor.

C. diff is EXTREMELY virulent and easy to catch. Studies show that you have an increased risk of catching it in the hospital if someone with C. diff stayed in your room *two weeks* before you, even if the room was cleaned every day since then.

That said, increased risk isn't a sure thing, and I can't imagine not being there. C. diff spores can be inhaled, so if it were me, I would wear a mask over my mouth and nose, wash hands, change clothes after leaving, and not eat while visiting.

If you're on chemotherapy, different story -- if so, talk to oncologist.

Sunflower seeds. Are you crushing them really fine?my doc says NO SEEDS OR CORN amoung many other things. I guess our flares are all different and triggered by different food

Getting ready for a doc appointment for a broken foot and then heading out to see my mumsie.
Not the greatest year. UC, uterine cancer, lymppodema in left leg from surgery, broken foot, big node bump under chin . None of that matters. Im gonna miss my mama

Is FLORASTER AN OVER THE COUNTER OR PREscriptION DRUG?
I'm not on radiation yet but I am in a flare in spite of my UCERIS and my 8 Apriso. Where do I go go buy a gown? I feel so much stress right now
Hospice is at my sisters house and they say the diarrhea is constant now 24/7 My sister said don't come. She will set up FaceTime.
It takes 2 hours to get there. I'm in a very bad panic mode!

Florastor is over the counter.
I agree that if you are very careful and follow precautions and make sure to wash your clothes well when you get home... Than you should by all means go visit your mom.

Wear a plastic gown and gloves. Wash your hands with antibacterial soap and water both before and after you visit. Hug her but maybe don't kiss her.
If you get loose stools after visiting than get tested for c. Diff.

I think the doctors are being a bit to harsh.

My GI just called and said that i am at great risk given my condition.
He said if her diarehhia subsides a few days, that I can visit briefly.
My sister will.call me tonight with FaceTime and leave the computer in her room with just she and I so I can sing softly to her and tell her goodbye.
My dear sweat mom...as we come into the world so must we all leave...she has had 92 good years and I am grateful for those..
