Now, the 15th week of Fecal Transplants with second donor is at its end. I performed only 2 transplants this week, on Monday and Friday. Although I feel great, I now know that I'm not cured yet and should not stop the infusions. During this week, I indulged heavily on nuts, seeds and fresh vegetables and suffered the return of some of the symptoms. However, these symptoms were nothing in severity compare to what I'd experienced up until not that long ago, and after having only a taste some of the mentioned above. Also, twice during this week there was a sudden improvement in symptoms shortly after cutting down on these ingredients and before administrating another fecal transplant. Something I'd never known before going on the therapy. It reminded me of what Dr Briggs wrote about
his trial with eating gluten after he'd finished the therapy. Perhaps it is a proof that the process of colonization has already happened. So I'm doing well but still not there, not cured. I plan on cutting down the infusions to twice a week and if I'll experience deterioration or stagnation I will consider increasing the frequency.
I now want to add some more practical information that might help others. My current donor is very generous. In fact she is not a natural morning goer so she has to 'engineer' her body in order to have a BM in the morning before going to work. As a result the donations are particularly big and after I mix it with the saline I get about
1 liter of liquid. It even used to be much more (about
one and a half liter) before she made a change in her food intake. Now, I'm very greedy when it comes to her bacteria so I try my best not to let even a drop of it get wasted. As a result I struggle to keep it in for as long as I can. It has become easier lately. Straight after the infusions, I used to have my body upside down for as long as I could, following Curl's advice. I would lean against the sink unit and the top surface would make a great supporter for the calves of my legs and my whole body weight. Perfect. Then, after I felt that I could stand up without everything coming back out, I would clean up and have a shower. After the shower I would lie on a sofa for much longer, using the edge of it and some cushions to elevate my bottom and to encourage the bacteria to travel north. The all process has become much quicker lately. I think it's to do with the the decrease in quantity but also with the state of my gut. Probably the new bacteria recognize their old friends and are happy to join in to what feels like a reasonably good environment. In any case, the days of infusions are not easy and eventually part of the liquid with lots of air comes out in the hours of the afternoon. Sometimes I have to be strong and remind myself that what I experience is not UC's symptoms but FTs'.
Now, about
the blending process. I used to use an electric blender with first donor and also a little bit with the second one. I am not sure I have a certain opinion about
it. For a long time now I've been mixing the stool with saline in a plastic container using a metal fork and then I strain it into another container through a metal strainer using the same fork. It takes much longer than mixing with the blender which is probably also something to consider when thinking about
the loss of bacteria as result of a long exposure to oxygen. However, by now I'm used to it this way, there is much less to clean, and I'm getting quicker all the time.
Thanks for your kind replies. I'm glad I've carried on with the infusions for as long as it took to be certain about
the effect of it on the gut. It hasn't been easy but nothing compare to the suffering of the symptoms for so long without the help of medication. I'm grateful to all the people who shared their experiences with FTs and to Dr Brandt who encouraged me to performed it at home. However, I'm glad I didn't follow his advice that after 2 weeks I would know whether it works or not. It took nearly 6 weeks with first donor and then about
13 weeks with second to be certain that an healing process had taken place, and I'm still here.
On a different issue, I'm glad to read about
these centres
opening all over the world offering the service of performing infusions and providing stools from donors who were tested for infectious diseases. I think it will help in promoting the understanding of the use of this method and hopefully will encourage more people to try it and perhaps even to the development of the right pill. However, it upsets me to read about
their high charges or claims of using some secret formula or ways to make it work. Both of my donors had blood and stool tests and I don't believe there is anything I could do better than I've already done. There is no need for a secret formula or method. It is all described clearly on this board and on the Power of Poop. It is free.
I don't remember myself being so happy. At work I was able to join my colleagues for lunch in our food-hall and ate mainly salads!
Curl, I will update your entry in the list. I'm so happy for you.
I will write again next weekend.
I wish all of you a full recovery.
