fresh out of the hospital- prednisone question

I just spent the last five days in the hospital with terrible UC flare. I was on IV steroids and am now home taking prednisone. I am on 60mg of prednisone and the doctor told me to take it all at once in the morning. I'm curious if this is what you all do too? take it all at once, in the morning? has anyone ever split it up or taken it at a different time of day? I'm asking because I had a pretty good morning after taking it but now, by 2pm I'm starting to hurt and go to the bathroom again. I know it may just be something that takes time, but let me know your experience.

Yes, all in the morning. How were you on the IV steroids? Were you consistent with your symptoms during the day or did you have certain times of the day that were worse? What were your symptoms upon release from the hospital? Is it getting worse again now that you are on oral steroids? There is an adjustment period when you go from IV steroids to oral and again when you start to taper. I'm hoping you were sent home on more meds than just the steroids since prednisone is not considered a maintenance medication.

The doctor did mention a steroid foam when I was in the hospital- that was before I was on IV steroid though so we didn't go with that. I may mention it again if symptoms don't improve this week. I think I'll be ok though.

My story is a bit more complicated than my original post. I've been on Lialda for years now. Have also been on prednisone for most of the last two years (just can't get into remission after having my first child). I started getting Remicade infusions in November and haven't responded yet. getting my first double dose Monday next week.

I was diagnosed with c diff and my doctor started me on flagyll and told me to stop my 40mg of prednisone I had been on immediately. biggest mistake of my life. I went to the hospital about 4 days later and was sure I needed IV steroids because my symptoms were not just c diff but also inflammation. they disagreed and sent me home with vancomycin. 3 days after that I had to call and ambulance from home I had the worst abdominal pin ever, going every 20 minutes, severally dehydrated, and I started hyperventilating. finally the next day I had a different gi than my own come in and put me on IV steroids, which I know I needed. I came home yesterday.

I know it's terrible to be on prednisone as long as I have and trust me- it's my number one goal to get me off of it now. praying that Remicade starts to work with this next infusion and that can be the only medication I'm on :)

You've had a miserable time! I agree with the others to take it all in the morning with food if you're able to eat. Give it about 2 weeks to see improvement. I also agree with the vanco recommendation and I sympathize because the same happened to me...cdiff and inflammation with delayed treatment for the inflammation. Miserable. I hope you feel better soon.
