What IS this? Sharp pain upon sitting down.

Aye...I was just diagnosed with U.C. a few months ago and am trying to get into remission thru Lialda, (tapering) prednisone, and scd diet. I started having these super sharp pains that only lasted a second, (hurt enough to make me shout out) and had 1-2 during the course of the day. They are different from the pain and cramping that proceeds a bm and the pain is not on the side where the inflammation is, as noted on colonoscopy 3 months ago. After starting the intro diet on scd, I started to feel better and for about a week I had none of those sharp pains. But just today, I had several of them. Two happening right in succession, while standing, and two more several hours later - right upon sitting down, like the pressure of sitting triggered this pain. My gut in that spot feels sort of "sore" now. My GI gave me a rx for dicyclomine, but I wonder if what I'm feeling is indeed spasms. I just had an MRI a week ago, since GI wanted to rule out Crohn's, and small bowel looked good. I've read what other people have said about spasms, and it just doesn't seem to be what I'm feeling. I'm not sure what this could be, or if it's just par for the course in the life with UC.

Where are these sharp pains located? If it's the left side to rectum (or I suppose anywhere in the large intestine) than yes, unfortunately it can be par for course of UC until you get your flare under control. Do you know the extent of your UC? Meaning how high it goes? Regardless of the extent, please ask you doc for rectal meds. These can help you greatly in addition to oral meds (including the Bentyl).

Just read the title of your post lol. Pain upon sitting down can be low inflammation (which rectal meds can help) or possible hemmroids.

Hi Red, The inflammation is just above the sigmoid colon, (left side) and I'm not sure just how far it goes, but certainly doesn't round the bend to the transverse colon, and no inflammation below, either. The pain I'm having is right-sided and higher up, but still colon area, and not rectal, and not like any hemorrhoids I've ever had. (and I've had three children and the hemmies to show for it!)

Lol. Yeah, "Pain upon sitting down"! Sounds like a day in the life of someone with IBD, and a no-brainer at that! Anyway, GI scheduled another colonoscopy (he didn't do the 1st one) for later in March if pains didn't go away. Yeesh. I do not want that. So do you think rectal meds will help the pains on the right side? Do they reach that far?

So you have no sign of UC lower then the sigmoid? UC typically presents itself with continuous inflammation or ulceration from the rectum on up. Do you happen to have copies of your original colonoscopy reports? Do you know if it says patchy inflammation/ulceration or continuous?

I don't have formal copies of colonoscopy, but I was in the surgeon's office when he showed me pictures, and really took me on a photographic tour of my colon. He was able to reach just past the ilium, and said everything looked good except for that section just above the sigmoid. Nothing lower. Both he and my GI say this is an uncommon place for UC to start, although not unheard of. This is why he did MRI.

And I don't recall whether he said "Patchy" or "continuous", but on the form that gets sent out after the colonoscopy, the surgeon hand-wrote "Colitis; active, chronic". I do know that he was uncertain about whether it was definitely UC, from where the inflammation was located. That's all I got, unfortunately. I'm concerned that another patch of inflammation has cropped up, only in the ascending colon. Is this possible - even though I've been on prednisone + Lialda?

We're all different but my spasms don't hurt, they feel like a twitch. I'm not an expert by any means but maybe it could just be a pocket of gas stuck behind the inflamed area of your colon. Sitting may "squish" that area and the gas has nowhere to go so the colon stretches a bit, sort of like when you squeeze one side of a balloon and the other side stretches out. Just a guess.

I will often have gas pains, without realizing they are gas pains, because it feels so much different than my pre-UC days. I may not pass gas for a couple hours, then I'll realize that's what the pains were. If its severe, definitely keep in touch with your doctor.
