Your Views on UC Treatment? (pills vs plant)

Isleman, stop talking as if you are the know all, end all of UC! You are not! You say something and then say you never said it. Some people do and can eat burgers and donuts every day. It really is not up to you what people eat and you have no idea how it effects them, so stop with your telling all of us what to eat, what to take and what to believe. This forum is for asking each other advice, not for telling what is right and what is wrong! You have been reported and will continue to be as long as you continue to attack people on this forum for good reason, not your personal attacks and what you think are the cures for UC! Get real! Your articles do not help your fake words, so stop posting what we all already know and know is fact or fiction, your words are, however, fiction, or you have convinced yourself that you can cure UC.

Well, the winners most certainly aren't the majority of our forum users, when a thread turns into bickering among several users.

Now this thread is just plain getting silly. I think there's just too much of a certain plant being smoked/eaten.

It is interesting that some think there is a 'war' going on, and that one side is 'pulling ahead' or in 'in the lead'.
Others accept that people are individuals, utilizing all available resources according to need - without suggesting they know of a cause, or a unique solution.

Anybody who needs "natural" supplements is also taking a "drug" and some of them are potent. In fact people are often getting sick from eating some of them. Most unregulated.

I'm of Indian background and my parents swear by nature. However the most sensible thing to do is eat well, sleep well and excercise. And take reasonable medication and supplement in moderation.

Anything "additional" is a medicine no matter what you label it.

That's the simple and better definition of medicine. Drug is something more specific I reckon and closer to medication. Though they all branch out from medicine. Of course anybody taking anything has the responsibility of checking out the sources and safety and ethical profiles of what they're consuming.

Great advice, particularly the second sentence. Different diseases are different. The one positive thing about UC is that it allows several methods of taking on the disease as it's gut-related. Evidence continues to pile up in favour of Diet, probiotics, fibre and use of gut building l-glutamine and omega 3 outside the purely clinical medication-based channels. Of course a combined approach is the third alternative.

For ME..I use both. As soon as I finish any antibiotics, I drink Keefer and eat Greek yogurt. A combination of Remicade, Asacol, and the other drugs prescribed. I also drink ginger root tea. Ginger seems to help with mild joint pain from mild arthritis. As others have said...do what works for YOU. I'm happy to have found this forum. Kind of lets us know we aren't alone with this ugly illness. Good luck to all.

Some thoughts:

Again, do you believe eating pizza and donuts every day or even every other day is utilising all available resources according to need? Or did you just want to get in a quick one? Under the auspices of neutrality, you are picking a side. Why not just pick a side right off the bat?

There are several things to question: Why is it ok to remind people to not be negligent of taking their meds? In the same vein, why is it not ok to remind people of diet's role on oxidative stress, bacteria and immunity? Nobody has advised that people shouldn't take medication, that would indeed be outrageous. It seems we have an unspoken orthodoxy, an imbalance of power. To speak of diet itself is to offend people. To speak that medication only suppresses the disease and it comes right back in most cases when you stop is not ok. Of course there are many more questions which go beyond all this, one of which is that some people feel more entitled to offence.

In conclusion:

The good news is that this imbalance of power is long shifting and those who claim that diet does not contribute to healing or worse make justifications for their own sedentary, eat-what-you-like lifestyle through will be a tight-lipped minority as research washes away their myths. The thread is not about any person really - the information about diet has a utilitarian character - but about the lines on what is comfortable, offensive, uncomfortable, lines which despite all resistance will continue to be redrawn. The time for defending diet is over, it is an obvious truth, known including to those needing medication and benefiting from both. Food's role in oxidative stress, bacteria and immune is real. It is not suggestive of a cure. It is a founded fact which helps in the healing and can allow to avert the worsening of disease when combined in treatment with the medications they may need to take or for those of us who have had success with alternative approaches when combined with diet.

If that's all you got out of it, good on you.

Perhaps I should have thanked isleman for his nasty, deluded personal attack on our lovely moderator, myself, and several other members?

My experience, which is really all I have (this disease is an enigma to me) is this....when I have been over a flare for some time - months...I usually slide back into eating almost whatever I used to. Eventually I have another flare, cause I have UC. While having flares I've tried acupuncture, anthroposophical medicine (MD specially trained), macrobiotics, aloe, supplements. My experience is NOTHING works when I'm having an active flare. I need prednazone. (haven't qualified for stronger/safer meds).

A few years back, after constant flares, I went on GAPS diet (very similar to SCD diet someone else mentioned). After reading the GAPS book, the doctor had me convinced she knew what she was talking about. The diet is not for the faint of heart, but for the desperate. I did it, a very weird allergy elimination process with a health practitioner I stumbled into, and got a stern talk by my gastro. to take my meds every morning and night without fail (which I have done, it had just changed from Asacol to Delzicol. To this day I do not know what happened, but (taking prednazone for the flares too) the flares went away, for years. My last colonoscopy was my FIRST colonoscopy in decades that did not show inflammation.

I got the above results by taking prednazone (controlling the out of control flare), switching and being vigilant with my Delzicol, rigorously doing the GAPS diet (I lost 25 lbs which since gained back since got off GAPS diet later on), and doing the allergy elimination thing weekly with the practitioner. Which worked? I don't know....but I'm going to do it all again. Maybe this combo won't work this time. Maybe doc with discuss different meds with me since I have been religious about the Delzicol, in which case I'll be back here reading and asking questions about meds.

All I can say is for myself, the best alternative measures never worked while I had a flare. Finally some alternative practitioners confirmed for me they hadn't the tools to stop a flare.

And, next time my flare stops? I'm not going to go off eating what I want....I'm staying on the GAPS diet or at least getting off of it - after a good 2 year period she recommends....according to her protocol and not mine. It was fun eating what I wanted...I didn't eat really crazy....but nice going out to eat, mexican food, etc. But no more, not for me.
