This should not be that people are leaving the forum over these surgery discussions. Good, valuable people are leaving. I agree that the discussions get out of hand, but IMO mostly because people have strong opinions and not everyone respects everyone else's opinions. Hence it turns into a nasty debate over who is right and who is wrong.

Why is DMC in trouble for having strong opinions about surgeons, but it is ok for ByeBye to call her ignorant? What are the rules here because they seem biased from my perspective. Certain people seem to be getting away with the same things that others aren't. Why is that?

I don't think these threads are getting locked always because of inappropriate breaking of the forum rules. I think they get locked when people are intolerant of other people's opinions. This is the real shame of things.

Just an on the side. When I was in the hospital for my UC I had a GI assigned to me that didn't know anything about my case and wanted to immediately perform surgery and take out my colon. I did not have toxic mega colon so it wasn't an urgent situation. My GI who wasn't affiliated with the hospital that I was in told me absolutely not. He knew my case. So, unfortunately, there are those doctors out there who are extremely aggressive with surgery when it may not be necessary.

And I just want to add, I have no issue with anyone here. I just don't get why the rules don't seem consistent for everyone. I have no problem with Bye Bye, I was just making a point. Let's be fair to all.

I used to get caught up in nonsense like this (and the threads that have been locked) but then I realized it was my choice to decide if I wanted to or not, I don't so I stopped.

I could share my opinion about surgery (even though I haven't had one) but because it gets so heated around that subject, I choose not to participate with them....if I want to read about surgery options I should have the right to as well as to give my own opinion cuz that's all it is. But what I simply do is avoid threads that I know (based on years of experience here at HW) will cause more grief than help....bickering doesn't help anyone. There are also some members that I avoid like the plague rather than let them suck me into what they like to call a debate but the truth is, they're so miserable with their circumstances (understandably but still) as I am with mine so rather than fuel the fire I avoid, rather than engage on unproductive squabbling that leaves a lot of anger and hurt feelings, I have enough of that in my life and even if I didn't, I realized I don't like giving other people that control anymore, so I disengage and stick to topics where I can be helpful rather than just another unwell person lashing out.

Just my 2 cents.

Some good ideas about toning things down were shared by a few, and perhaps they'll be considered in future surgery threads.
