Colonoctomy Advice

My last colonoscopy in February showed disease has spread to small intestine. Dr advises colon removal due to dysplasia increase as well. UC is not under control, nor has it ever been in the past four years! Not unbearable at the present time. Three or four loose BM's before i go to work everyday. Up during the night once or twice. Diagnosed Oct 2012.

I have had C diff twice. Once that was cleared up, smell improved

Current meds: imuran, 4 pills
Vit D2 (Ergocal) 1.25 cap 50,000U once a week
Omeprazole DR 20 mg cap once a day
Prednisone 10 mg Tablet - 1/2 tablet once a day.

I agree with Jonny, biologics might help. I would be very cautious about having surgery when you have activity in the small intestine. UC surgery only involves the colon, the area of the small bowel that is inflamed would remain inflamed, so your symptoms may would persist. They may be less problematic, but if you have inflammation in the small bowel, it's possible you have Crohn's, which means it could continue to attack areas throughout the small intestine and over time you could be back at square one. Was there actual evidence of dysplasia or was his assessment due to having uncontrolled UC? I think I would get a 2nd opinion. Suggesting surgery without even trying biologics is crazy, especially in the case of having activity in the small intestine. I don't like this GI's approach at all.

I'd be concerned about the dysplasia. Perhaps a second opinion is in order.
