I was thinking to try vitamin B complex but I'm a bit afraid of vit B6. I'm curious what your experiences with vit B are? :)

For what ever reason synthetic B vitamins make me feel horrible.
With that said, I've read of some IBD sufferers taking B vitamins and feeling better.

I take a B-Complex and it doesn't cause me any issues. It's another of those individualistic thing.

Why are you afraid of vitamin B6?
It might be better to take B complex rather than a single B vitamin because otherwise they can become unbalanced. It may make a difference which kind of B complex you take:
For years folic acid, a B vitamin, gave my girlfriend trouble and we never knew why. Then with her 23andme DNA analysis we discovered that she had a MTHFR defect. So she switched from folic acid to folate. (Folic acid is an artificial form of the B vitamin folate).
The same with vitamin B12. She had to stop taking the artificial form of B12, cyanocobalamin and switched to the natural version which is methylcobalamin.
So if you are going to take B vitamins it wouldn't hurt to make sure that your bottle says folate instead of folic acid, and methylcobalamin instead of cyanocobalamin. FWIW pyridoxal-5-phosphate is the natural form of vitamin B6.

It depends on what form of B vitamins; also it helps to know if you are positive for one or both the MTHFR alleles. 23 and Me still offers a free genome kit to UC'rs. I found out I had one out of 4 possible variations which may indicate I don't metabolize B vitamins properly...and bought a special complex of B's by Vital Nutrients.
Be sure your B-12 is in the form of methylcobalamin. You can also get the methylcobalamin in the form of little tabs to put under your tongue which is ideal for absorption. With the special Bs and monthly B injections I began feeling much better and my homocysteine dropped from 29 to 12.
BUT I do have some upper gas when I dose the B vitamins. I was told it was because they increase your production of stomach acid. Hope you are well :)
Why are you afraid of B-6? Most people with IBD are low in it.

great thanks to all of you for the answers :) i don't trust vit b6 because i've read that it has proinflammatory properties, but on the other hand, i've also heard uc may cause deficiency of it. I've never heard about
MTHFR alleles but it may be possible i have such a defect too. Zengirl - what's exactly the name of that B's complex you're taking? maybe i could buy it via iherb which sends to Europe

Hi Ewa! I use the Vital Nutrients brand B-complex you can do a search on Amazon. As IamCurious said, it's also important not to dose with Folic Acid, but folate, and the B12 should be methylcobalamin. Even if you don't have signs of MTHFR these types of B-vits are harmless and more bio-available. You can't over dose with the B's, too much and you just have yellow pee.
You should take advantage of the free 23 and Me DNA report--it is free to those with UC as they are trying to find a genetic cause for UC so it helps the whole community as well.
