Ode to UC

Hey guys! I'm doing an MGRP in my English class on Ulcerative Colitis. The reason why I chose this is because like most of you on this forum, I have UC and want to find some way to bring this horrible disease to light! I made a small little poem that I wanted to share with you guys! It's in its crude form, but I would appreciate the read and any feedback! I'm fairly new to this disease, being diagnosed in late 2012 when I was only 15 years old. I'm also new to this forum, so if I am posting in the wrong spot please be sure to let me know! Thanks!



An ode to UC:

I’m sick of despair
Desiring nothing but fresh air,
Longing to be well,
Escaping from this hell

Limits we face,
What choices did we make?
Watching from a window,
A world we can’t chase

Who to turn to?
When no one understands,
Where’s the next bathroom?
Oh life is all but grand

But what should we do?
With all of this despair
Lie down, unhappy?
When life isn’t fair?

For this is what makes me, me!
So what I have a disease?
Hospital visits, bathroom trips
Yes, it’s a life full of unease

But with the grace of God,
And the support of true friends,
I will fight this disease,
Until the bitter end!

Maybe I’ll finally see,
I was graced with a gift,
That god only gave to people
Who could deal with it

So I sit here and smile,
Ending on a positive note,
No life’s not fair,
This, you can quote

So for everyone with UC,
Beat this disease!
Not just for you!
But also for me!

Great poem lonewolf and Old Mike's add on gave me a good chuckle. If I wrote a poem about UC the whole thing would have to be bleeped out from all of the cursing that would be going on. I know I would also have to have a verse about rectal meds. I guess I just can't get out of that anger phase. Seriously though, it is great to be able to get your feelings out in such a nice poem. Here is my funny add on...


I have to write a poem
After I use my Cortifoam
This UC has me in a rut
Enough rectal meds in my butt
I have so many boxes of Rowasa
Laying all around my casa

This disease makes me neurotic
Wait, did I take my probiotic?

NCOT..Yeah..never a gift or a punishment. I don't believe in divine tests or punishments.

writing poems are helpful and allow out thoughts and feelings to be tangible. They're a good thing.

I find those early in diagnosis or haven't hit the acceptance phase yet tend to do more poems.

Good one Uniform Charlie! Gotta try and laugh at this crap the best you can. Maybe we can make a book of Ode's. Whatever helps us deal with it.

I am fairly new to this disease, but I disagree with quincy as well. I have definitely accepted this disease for what it is, but just because I am spinning it in such a way that is light-hearted does not mean i'm blind to it. I guess we all just have a different perception, and the disease impacts our lives in different ways.

No hate! just opinions! I have honestly really enjoyed reading these responses, and exploring other forum posts. Since discovering this website, I realize there is a vast community in the online realm, and that if I have any questions I will get an honest, and straight to the point answer based on the experiences another person has faced! It's very nice seeing multiple perspectives of the same disease, especially because I only know of one other person that has this illness that I see often in my life. I hope by saying I disagree with their opinion didn't come off as me being shrewd and distasteful! That was not at all my intentions! Much love!
