So my husband was disagnosed with UC in October 2014 after he nearly went septic due to a massive flareup and a toxic megacolon as his doctor and almost surgeon called it. Heavy drugs kicked him into remission, but we soon discovered his labwork was all kinds of jacked up, most worrisome was his ast and alt. So his GI took him off of all medications, which included methotrexate, lialda, and pred, assuming that they had a lot yo do with the liver issues..his UC has been completely undercontrol , not a single flareup since then, and he is only on humira..but his liver enzyme levels are still through the darn roof..his GI just scheduled a liver biopsy, mri and ultrasound..i was just wondering if anyone has any experience with this situation? The way the GI was talking and anything i have found on the topic suggests that his medication is not the source, and it might be something more serious... anything, anyone?!?!

Usually toxic megacolon means removal of the large intestine. Sometimes, it can be controlled with biologics, like humira. I'd get a second opinion from another gastroenterologist.

Never had this problem with my liver, despite having had toxic megacolon and going on all the heavy-duty drugs.

It might be worth seeking a second opinion with another GI, like iPoop suggested, but I think I would wait to see what the liver biopsy and ultrasound shows first.

He was lucky to get out without surgery, and to be doing so well thus far..but all meds take a toll on your body.. i guess all i can do is wait for the biopsy and mri and ultrasound. I guess I'm just worried its going to be something in the realm of psc, and wasn't sure how common that was with UCers?

Definitely not changing GIs, my husbands is absolutely amazing and that is so incredible hard to come by in the medical field at times!

I'd wait to have the liver biopsy, usually you go for some scans first and then you go for the biopsy only if it is necessary. You should check out some of the threads that Quincy has replied to about PSC.

It's not common, but there is a 3% chance for males with UC apparently, which isn't negligible.

Deffo don't even think about changing GIs if you have a really good one.
