Fecal Microbiota Transplant for C-Diff

I was hoping after my IPAA surgery for Ulcerative Colitis I wouldn't have to post on here again about my GI issues. Everything has been going well since the IPAA surgery, but May of last year I had to have Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy. Approximately 2 months later I developed abdominal pain, nausea, diarrhea,and other symptoms that appeared to be pouchitis, so GI doc prescribed Cipro and Metronidazole. Things went well for about 6 weeks and then things started getting bad again, so started Cipro and Metonidazole again. Had a flex-sig done and there was little pouchitis, so doc was puzzled. Cipro and Metronidazole would temporarily improve things, but health continued to deteriorate until January of this year, began being hospitalized. C-diff test came back negative at first, but once fever began, test began to come back positive for C-diff. Antibiotics stopped working after third Diagnosis of C-Diff, which resulted in acute kidney failure, among other things. I have returned to the Mayo Clinic and they have started me on Vancomycin, which is an antibiotic I have not tried before. If the Vancomycin fails then they will do Fecal Microbiota Transplantation. Questions: Have any of you had this kind of problem with C-Diff? If so, how did you finally get it resolved? Have any of you had the Fecal Microbiota Transplant? If so, did it work? How fast did it work? How many transplants did you have to have? Another thing I forgot to mention. My employer made accommodations so that I could work at home and only pickup files during off hours so as not to become exposed or to expose anyone else to C-diff; however, even after 3 months with virtually no contact with anyone other than my wife and no hospital visits, I still developed C-diff. Any input is greatly appreciated as always!

there is a lot of research on the fmt procedure for c-diff and it is very effective

i would do it before vanco, which is very toxic

Hi I had three bouts of C-Diff while battling UC. I took all the medication you noted and also Dificid. It is very expensive but thank God my insurance covered it. Nothing cured the C-Diff until I had FMT. I also had this before my Jpouch surgeries. The FMT procedure was just like any other colonoscopy. I was better within a couple days, however I was also in the worst UC flare I'd ever had. I think the FMT was more difficult for my sister who was the donor just because she had never had to do anything like that before. C-Diff is the worst. I have been so well since getting my j-pouch that its frightening to even consider getting C-Diff again. I hope everything goes well for you.

Thanks for the input everyone. Buckeye, I'm glad to hear FMT worked well for you. I hope I have the same results. I have adrenal insufficiency so having C-Diff infection is causing me to have episodes of adrenal crisis. I talked to the GI doc at Mayo today and she felt I should be progressing more on Vancomycin, so they are scheduling me in for FMT.
