I want to get breast implants. I've done a little research for those with IBD. I came across a few posts where a GI wouldn't allow the surgery. I found one who had it done. Just interested in what others would find concerning if they were considering this surgery with IBD. I've queried the surgery with the dr who performs it and he didn't see any major issues. I have mild proctitis with one flare in my 8 years of having it. I have one major concern of my own, just interested to hear others

Are you on any meds that are immunosuppressive? If not, I can't think of any reason not to have the surgery. It sounds like your disease is mild and well controlled.

I agree with platinumpixie, I see no problem unless you're currently on an immunomodulator (Imuran, 6mp, aza) or biologic (remicade, humira, simponi) which would increase your risk of infections. I'd also add you preferably shouldn't be on corticosteroids at the time of the surgery as it'd slow healing and increase risk of infections. Surgeries do happen while on steroids though just expect recovery times to be extended.

Of course, check with your gastroenterologist first. Other than immunosuppression, I'm not sure why a gastroenterologist would decline or say no? Any other thoughts on why a gastroenterologist would say no?

If you're currently in remission the only thing I could think of is perhaps the stress your body goes through by having surgery could trigger a flare. Just something to think about.

Another thing to think about is most times they will give you antibiotics to prevent infections. Antibiotics can severely mess with your guts.

I'd be scared of taking the antibiotics too but i wouldn't let it stop me from doing something I really wanted to do. I actually wanted to get some fat sucked out of my chin a while back and I contacted a surgeon and they said I would have to wait until my UC was stable. The great thing is that I lost weight after surgery and the double chin went away. lol. I personally wouldn't choose a doctor based on whether they would take you as a patient. Be as strict about choosing as you would be if you didn't have UC. You want to be safe and end up happy about the results. You know breast implants come with a long list of their own potential issues. They also aren't considered lifetime devices, so you're committing to future surgeries.

I can never understand the desire for breast implants unless there has been cancer or some disfigurement. This is major surgery, just to have men harass you more?

Anybody's free to get a cosmetic surgery if they truly want it. Call it empowerment to do whatever you want. That said, I'd never go for any cosmetic surgery, myself, but that's just me.

It is outpatient surgery, not major surgery. It is Petah's prerogative to get the surgery.

It sounds like your symptoms are mild. I had a colectomy and a couple of concerns that the surgeons have with UC meds are steroids which can weaken your skin and cause healing to take longer. I was on steroids at the time and they tried to perform my surgery Laparoscopically but my skin failed when they inflated my abdomen so then they had to cut me open and perform it as an open surgery. So if you were on Steroids and stretching the skin in your chest area could be problematic. After being off of steroids for 6+ months there shouldn't be a problem.

As others have mentioned the antibiotics could cause you some UC issues. I'd load up on the probiotics a few weeks ahead of time and maybe increase your maintenance meds if that is possible.
