Canasa medication

Would someone mind telling me about Canasa? I am currently on this because of inflammation located in the rectum. My dr. mentioned I should use Canasa till the bleeding stops and use it one extra week. Then gradually come off Canasa.

Does anyone know how quickly Canasa dissolves once you insert it?

Yes....thank you. Canasa has stopped the bleeding or I should say I have not seen any blood in stools since I have begun taking Canasa.

Canasa is a maintenance drug, i use it everyday. No matter what.

The bleeding I had this time was similar to a menstrual cycle except blood came out while passing stool in toilet and noticed on tp. The blood was bright red and had a couple of blood clots. No pain at all. Only felt pressure after bowel movements in the rectum area. An examination was not done based on past medical history. 3 colonoscopy since 2003. During 2nd one it was noted I had two areas with inflammation...one in rectum and the other further in the colon. My last colonoscopy was 2012 and the area where inflammation in colon had been cleared up. The doctor thinks it is another flare up and suggested we try this procedure (Canasa) before doing another colonoscopy.

The doctor said to use Canasa every night until bleeding stops then go one extra every night. Then gradually come off Canasa. I am to call the doctor in 2 weeks to let him know how things are going. If I am still bleeding at the time I call him then another colonoscopy would be done. Fortunately the bleeding stopped after the first night of using Canasa. I plan to use it every night until after I talk to the doctor. Hopefully I won't have to have another colonoscopy for at least a couple more years.

I did not know Canasa is a maintenance drug. Also, did not realize how strong it can be.

have you tried hydrocortisone enemas ?

Canasa dissolves pretty quick with your body heat. Try to retain it for at least one hour if you can, all night if possible.

It will stain your underwear if you start feeling better and have gas.

Canasa is different than Aspirin (a NSAID), so I doubt you'd have the same reaction. Canasa is a 5-ASA or mesalamine.

Compounds of 5-aminosalicyclic acid (5-ASA) are also called mesalamine. They are chemical cousins to aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid or ASA) but differ in their effects on UC. Aspirin is not effective in treating ulcerative colitis and may actually worsen or trigger an attack. However, 5-ASA compounds can be very effective at treating attacks of UC as well as maintaining remission as long as these drugs reach the portion of the colon or rectum that is inflamed.

As they're chemically different enough, the reaction is not the same. If you have any concerns about 5-ASA due to your prior reactions to Aspirin, then just start with low doses. And Canasa is usually considered a low dose.
