Is that normal if your GI told you stop taking med ?

Hi i'm 19 y/o male and i was diagnose left uc 6 month ago. Taking drug for 4 month and it's seem like my uc retract a bit from left side to sigmoid uc. And from that my GI just give me the drug for 2 month and told me that's the last drug you need. Is it normal when he said that, i read a lot of topic that we shouldn't stop taking med unless the flare will come soon right ? Should i tell that to my GI or keep taking PENTASA mesalamine 1g/day for myself ? Please help me. Sorry for my bad english.

Yes, if you have ulcerative colitis than the medical recommendation is a maintenance medication for life. Like your pentasa.

My UC really very mild, I had symtoms a month before i was diagnosed and in that time without treatment of course, i dont have bloody diarrhea, it just some blood dot mix with my stool and sympton is just want to go to toilet 7-8 times a day. One more Question, Since my UC retracted is it possible it will spread or it will stay at my Sigmoid ? And Should I take PENTASA MESALAMINE 1G/DAY FOR MY SELF ?

If you still have BM's 7-8 times a day you should be treating your UC. But the question is whether oral RX can treat the sigmoid area. My UC started with proctitis and I believe if I had been prescribed rectal meds (mesalamine enema and suppositories) my UC may have been stopped from becoming so bad.

My opinion is that your GI is wrong to stop RX if you still have symptoms. All standard protocol is that once you have UC it never goes away but can be in remission for short or long periods of time.

Ask your GI for rectal meds, start using mesalamine enemas nightly and don't stop until your symptoms stop. That is your goal, no symptoms. Then you can lower frequency of enemas and use suppositories once or twice a week.

If your GI says "no" to this immediately get another GI. They are not all geniuses and it's your body who has the symptoms.

Thanks for replying me guys. One more question, is it real my uc is retracted? As i said my last scope showed the inflammation just at my sigmoid and rectal but 4 months ago my scope showed i have left-sided imflammation. So this is retracted or it just dimer ? Because i've read something about the cancer risk is no higher than population when i have sigmoid colitis and below but left-sided can increase the chance. Thanks again guys

And also based on how long you've had the disease with active inflammation. The longer you have UC, the time between scopes lessens. After 10 years, typically you will expect to get scoped every year to two years because the odds of cancer increases. But people who have Pancolitis (inflammation of the entire intestine) have the higher chances of colorectal cancer.

My first GI doc told me to stop taking my meds and I flared. This happened repeatedly and overall he didn't manage me well. Fortunately, I moved to another state, got a new GI and she added rowasa enemas which was very helpful. I would find a new doctor for yourself.

With a j-pouch, you poop normally and nobody would know you had it.

Yes, dysplasia is an early stage in the development of cancer. So dysplasia should proceed cancer. It's often seen early through colonoscopy and verified through biopsy. Crc is generally a slow moving cancer, so theres often ample time to detect and treat it. A chromoscopy colonoscopy (which uses a contrasting dye) is a little more precise in finding small polyps and instances of dysplasia.

Your pentasa mesalamine has been shown to reduce your colorectal cancer odds. Generally speaking take your medication whether you're feeling good or bad, and stay on top of your symptoms and contact your gasteroenterologist if your symptoms get worse. Our odds of crc are significantly increased when our ulcerative colitis isn't well controlled, especially when it's for a prolonged time.

Try not to worry so much, as there's 95 percent odds that you won't get crc.
