If you think her leaving school is disruptive I can understand talking to her parents, but you are her teacher, not her doctor. It's clear you care about this student but I don't think it's appropriate for a teacher to get involved in medical care and judgment.
I take your point that I'm her teacher and not her doctor. I don't think it is coming across to her that I'm making judgements. As I said, last year she had to drop out of school for the year as she missed so much school that she couldn't catch up. I want her to be successful this year and graduate next year. I have tried to get in touch with her doctors but have had no success.
Thanks for all the advice, I hadn't thought about
the possibility that she soils herself. This could definitely offer a reasonable explanation for missing class. I am definitely going to set up an appointment with the counsellor as it has become increasingly clear from all of your posts that she needs help coming to terms with having this illness.
Thanks for the clarification on 'holding' and 'chronic holding', I won't use this as a way to encourage her to stay eg. Please use the bathroom here as it must be damaging you to wait and run home.
Clearly she has enough anxiety about
toileting without me adding to it!
Thanks again everyone.
