Hi everyone,
I am currently in hospital due to a major 4 month flare up of my UC. A scope yesterday confirmed that I will be needing surgery which is happening in 3 days time. I can't believe how soon ot's happening and i haven't had much time to get used to the idea. My large bowel will be removed, i will get a stoma and an ileostomy bag. I'm just nervous anout the procedure itself but so glad its finally being done I have suffered too long and can't go on now responding to drugs. Also, I was fitted with an NGT only a couple hours ago as I have lost a worrying amount of weight and need built up before surgery. I gag every time i swallow and find it a bit uncomfortable. I know it will take time to get used to but how long? I'm worried the gag reflex won't go away. Has anyone had experience of a feeding tube?
Its been a rough day and i just would appreciate encouragement.
Cheers!

Good luck with surgery! For me it was such a relief. When I woke up I remember how calm my body felt with my colon out.
I don't have any experience with NGT, they put me on TPN prior to surgery to boost my nutrition.

I too felt so much better when I woke up after my colectomy, I finally felt healthy. My GI says it's like you wake up and realize the monster is gone. It was also less painful for me than I expected.

I don't want to downplay the seriousness of surgery, but you will do great. I would try not to worry. You're going to get through it and get your life back. Living with UC was so much worse than the surgeries were for me. I have to admit, the first step was tough for me, I didn't know what to expect so far as pain, or healing time, I couldn't take a lot of time off work, and I still got through it OK. I had a pain pump and things were well managed. Getting up is really hard at first, but the nurses will help you, and the sooner you're up and about
, the sooner you will heal and get out of there. After that initial few days, things get easier quickly. I never had that feeling of "wow, I feel so much better". It's been a process for me. I felt better simply because I didn't have to rush to the toilet anymore. I didn't feel like an infection was squelched or anything to that extent. I was able to eat normally shortly after the 1st step. That was exciting. I remember digging into take-out before I even left the hospital. It was great!
I never had a feeding tube. Everything was pretty "standard" for me.
A while back I started a list of people I remember who had surgery for UC. There have been SO, so, so many more over the years, but this is some. Almost all have moved on and no longer post.
There are also 1000s of pouchers on j-pouch.org. it's pretty active.

I'm actually surprised they put a NGT in for the purpose of feeding. TPN makes more sense to me.
