Hair Loss

Hairloss is a tricky one. Merely having ulcerative colitis makes us more prone to having hairloss with or without medications. Hairloss is usually a delayed reaction to a flare. Flares usually leave us a bit malnourished, result in low vitamin b, b12, and d levels which can result in hairloss. If you're anemic (have low blood iron levels) then that can cause hairloss as well. You can certainly get a blood test to check for those things. Hair growth should happen once the underlying problem is fixed.

I've got few flares in the last year with some major hairloss episodes. I was afraid of brushing and washing my hair for months. It was driving me crazy, hairs were everywhere in my appartment.
I think the reason in my case was that I was malnourished and prednisone (always losing hair 2-3 days after the last dose of pred).

I learned from a flare to an other and it got better.
First, I tried a shampoo called Nioxin, it did help. I could see all the little hair growing back between two hair losses episodes.
For undernourishment, I started using vega protein powder shakes and juicing vegetables, it's easy to digest while flaring. It did help a lot.
After a flare in November, I only lost hair in clumps for a few days after stopping the pred, so that was a major improvement!
Since December, I started using a mix of coconut oil and castor oil as a hair treatment. Now my hair look almost the same (well I still have many many shorter hair growing back and it gives me a weird hairstyle :P) And they got shiny and strong again.

Hold on, I couldn't believe it myself, but they will grow back eventually!

Lrachel i see that you tried all 5ASAs how long were you on each one before trying another and what happened when you took them?

Wow that sounds horrible. I didnt have that bad of symptoms. I had urgency abdominal pain and rectal pressure. And theybarebsayong i cant do mesamalmines.
