Anyone have advice on how to treat trigger finger? I don't see the orthopedic until next Thursday and my finger and hand are killing me. I tried doing some research but of course the recommendation is to treat with NSAIDS. I have been treating with heat and ice but I type a lot at work and it's becoming harder to do so. Any advice is welcome. Thanks!

My husband has trigger finger. Therapy wont help.

He's had cortisone shots. The first one wore off in a year.....the second one is still good for over a year and a half. Two is the limit apparently. He was scheduled for surgery, but the doc said that sometimes the shot can cure/completely stop the inflammation of the tendon nodule and the tendon will be perfectly free of any hindrance and move freely so that it can straighten. Surgery was cancelled twice, and he's to just call if it happens again since he's now on the "list".

He does have a special finger brace the doc said to use at night if it starts to stiffen up....so that the finger remains straight and not curled up in a fist, etc. Its a simple one, plastic and I'll search for a pic.....found one.

Thanks Quincy! I like that splint better than the one I bought last night. I can't type with the full one on but that looks like it will work until my appointment next week. Glad to hear he had results from the shot. That's what I am planning and hopefully it does the trick. Thanks again for the info, much appreciated!!

My husband had a shot too.... I didn't realize you can only have two. I hope if he needs another one then it cures it. On the other hand, I don't think the surgery is anything too drastic. My aunt had the surgery and is very happy with the results.

My husbands surgeon sayd that more steroid shots will cause damage and weakness to the tendon....therefore not an easy fix during surgery if it's in a weaker state for healing, integrity, success.

Welcome! Looking forward to hearing how your husband does with the shot. The surgery is pretty straight forward as explained to my husband...just have to pay attention to heeding healing advice.

Thanks for the info on the shots, I was wondering why there was a limit on the number of shots you can get so that explains it. I'll keep you posted!

My older daughter had trigger finger (thumb really) at the age of about 5. Had surgery at that time, no issues. At that age she had to be admitted to a hospital, but the DOC said for adults it is an in office procedure.

I had trigger finger
Had cortisone shots that helped but ultimately failed. You can have more than 2 but each gets less effective after. Also impairs healing possibly.

The typing is probably going to make it worse. Splinting may help a little. You can call GI and see if it would be ok to take NSAIDs they are quite helpful for trigger findger

Did you have the surgery Dikid? I am hoping the shots help. I wouldn't even try NSAIDS - they make me so sick - always did even before my UC diagnosis, but thanks for the suggestion.

Well if NSAIDs make you sick than you probably shouldn't take em.

I did have surgery and it was outpatient. Recovery was a cinch hardly used pain killers after. But I am young so recovery is easier. And my labs were good at that point. Not sure how my recovery would be if I had it now based on all my steroids I had...

Make sure to find a good surgeon. It makes all the difference. I know others who had bad experiences...

Glad you had positive results, hoping the shot does the trick and that's that. If not, I will definitely research surgeons before committing to anything.

My husband wanted to add.....the shot can take up to a month or so to become fully effective. The first one took almost a month for him, and it wore off shy of a year. The second shot took about a week to kick in and still doing fine.

I had trigger finger. My pointer finger on my left hand and pinky on my right. I tried the shots and therapy. Neither worked. I had to have release surgery for both. My pointer finger was so stuck it was actually fraying the tendon. I had no issue with the surgery but because I waited so long for surgery on my pointer I have limited activity with it. I can still use it normally but I have a hard time gripping things.
