Corticosteroids enemas

Hi everyone . I have a question I am currently decreasing from a 40mg dosage , now on 30mg and going down by 5mg every 10 days. I am also doing the corticosteroids enemas every few days. I noticed after the enemas I have more bleeding in the rectal area when use the toilet paper I see fresh red blood almost like some dripping for the next one or two times . Then the days I don't use it I don't really see blood at all . Is it possible that the enemas are irritating the area . Because my bms are formed I feel great besides the prednisone side effects ..

It could be irritating it when you insert it, but usually the enemas come with a little bit of lube on the end to facilitate insertion. How long have you noticed this? I'd call the doc just to be sure. You don't have an internal hemi do you?

Why did they prescribe the enemas?

You know I'm kind of suspecting my cortenemas too. GI wants me to do mesa and cort enemas each day, but on the weekend I'm only really able to do two. Might just be in my head, but I was thinking the corticosteroid enemas were irritating my lower end too. Dunno. Might just do mesalamine enemas for a few days.

Use Rowasa and Cortenemas and never had a problem,always positive results.

I don't have an internal Hemmi.

SO I didn't do It since Saturday and I have no bleeding. I am assuming its from the enemas. It doesn't hurt or anything but it only bleeds after I do it.

I am assuming to continue to do it at least once a week while I am tapering off the steroid just to be safe.

Sonetimes enemas just flush out more blood. I'd say it's unlikely the steroids are worsening your bleeding. You can always skip a couple consecutive nights and see if you feel better.

Oh I'm sure the steroids aren't causing me to bleed, I think it's the process of putting in the enema and actual insertion that's causing me to bleed . It's probably just a sensitive area.

As usual, total personal experience here. I was headed into a flare and Doc trying to stave off prednisone with mesalamine enemas and then onto the steroid enemas. They KILLED me. I don't know if I was so far into the flare that things were already spiraling or I was so inflamed.....but I started first one on a Friday night, I was in the ER Monday morning (no call back from doc over weekend.....grrrrr). It was like I had inserted acid. I was in the bathroom every 15-30 minutes with blood, mucous, worst tenesmus in the history of time. I was dehydrated and tachycardic from the exertion. Always trust your gut. Ended up on ususal pred 40 mg for tx.
