Surgery it is. They say there's no time to wait because I had a fever this morning and a colonoscopy showed ulcerative pancolitis and that a protective mucus layer was gone in 50% therefore putting me at risk of perforation and unable to travel to the US. They don't think the second dose of remicade will help. They also said there's no time for humira. Too bad. My bm's were down to 1 per day - less blood overall and sometimes no blood.
What should I ask the surgeon in our morning meeting before the surgery?
Obviously, I am not a doc so take with a grain of salt, but can you get a second opinion from another GI doc ASAP? It seems a bit rushed. You are clearly improving on a symptom level with having only 1 BM per day with reduced blood down from baseline of 15-20. Can you ask him about
risk of perforation given sig progress on a symptom level? Also many people have pancolitis and vast majority don't get their colon removed so on its own that is not meaningful. What did your biopsy results show? Are you having severe or moderate inflammation currently and where? I don't know much personally about
the 50% mucous layer being gone so I can't comment on that.
In addition, is the GI doc you are seeing a specialist in IBD or has seen many cases? Unfortunately, some GI docs have only seen a few cases. I switched to someone who is an IBD specialist and has seen many hundreds of cases and his treatment plan was totally different than the previous GI doc. My previous GI suggested 6MP when I was in a 12 year remission just because I couldn't tolerate mesalamine.
