Can Flareup be stopped by only mesacol (Mesalamine)??

Dear members,

Have any one of u have able to stop flareup by not taking steroid?? or enema?? by taking only mesacol?? is it possible?

Anything is possible, and yes there have been incidences, but it varies quite wildly. If you have real severe inflammation then steroids are likely required. If you have very moderate inflammation then simply increasing your medication dosages might suffice (like taking 4.8 grams of an anti-inflammatory 5ASA/Mesalamine and 4 grams of a rowasa enema nightly). It really depends how severe the inflammation is and how far it extends.

How bad are your symptoms: current bms a day, any blood, are they formed, etc?

I have stopped ALL my flares with oral/rectal mesalamine.
Why the question? Have you used the mesalamine retention enemas, or Are you hesitant to use them and would prefer to use just the oral?

Both end approach is best, and consider that UC starts at the rectum, no oral mesalamine will fully treat it.

I'm totally biased in that opinion based on my 28 year experience of treatment.

I have also stopped all my flares with mesalamine (not a high dose either) along with strict SCD diet. I had moderate inflammation when first diagnosed. They seem to work well together. Never took steroids even though they were prescribed to me each time and recommended.

thanx for ur reply,

currently I'm suffering from mild/ little fare up. bowl movement per day is 3 to 4. blood is attached in few portion of stool, not with all stool. Considering this, it may not severe flare up may be mild or little.

I have met with my gastroenterologist. He said this type of flare is common with UC. He didn't suggested to take steroid. Only oral mesalamine 2.4g/ day. According to him steroid may be used for more severe/ intense flare up.

He didn't suggested me to take enema foams etc.

so I was asking this question that, if it is possible to stop mild/ little flareup by only oral mesalamine without steroid.

yes, but they do not reach close to rectum, so if you get urgency or increased blood, consider enemas

your dose is low - 2.4g is the kind of dose you should be on all the time. when flaring 4.8g.

if you were on no meds, it is likely why you are flaring. your docs treatement does not seem agressive enough.

you could also ask about uceris steroid - it is milder.

Ask for 4.8g of oral mesalamine and ask for 4.0g of mesalamine enema (also known as rowasa, pentasa enema) as that change *could beat a minor flare*. If enemas are not available in your country then ask for mesalamine suppository or rectal foam. Treating from both ends is best.
