Hello all, please excxuse my intro email in case there is locked thread where people typically post theirs, I did not see one right away....
I have had UC awhile and am beginning to do research again as I'm currently experiencing pretty bad symptoms and I'm very stubborn. I am under a lot of stress for a variety of reasons which i think is making it difficult for my body to recover on its own but I'm going to begin documenting things, currently I take no medicine and have not for over 12 years, I know I am lucky but I'm also careless.
I was diagnosed with UC in 1996 at 10\11 years old. (almost 30 now)
at the time I was given asacol and prednisone to get it under control (I as ashamed of my problem and tried to hide it from parents until it was really bad... how silly)
it took me quite a long time to get off prednisone without a relapse, but once done I was in remission for almost 8 years taking asacol 3x a day (if I remember correctly)
When in college in my infinite wisdom I stopped taking asacol, and was miraculously fine. at the time my diet was beyond horrible, I drank more beer than I care to admit, had 3x redbull a day... pizza fried food every day, and I was doing great (aside from the brief weight gain for a year which I later lost)
at the age of 20 I acquired an external hemorrhoid about
an inch from you know what. it 'popped' once every few weeks... I didnt think anything of it, as everything else was normal, hopefully I have not grossed anyone out yet, but I still have this 'friend' of mine my friend comes back when I'm in remission about
once a month, when I'm having issues they're on vacation.
I'm sharing this partially for my own documentation but also because I intend to begin trying some biohacking and will document it here and hope some of my experiences can help others albeit it may not be a good idea to simply stop taking medicine because you are doing fine.
I briefly had small manageable issues again around age of 23 then was clean for a few more years at age 25 I went though a fly by flare, I was bad for a couple days then it went away, what is interesting is I was surprising a friend with many others in disney land and drank an emormous amount of alcohol, by wednesday of the following week I was doing great again. I'm not advocating alcohol and usually its bad for me, but its just my history.
I was pretty good until I went through some serious person things at 27 (go figure another 2 years.... just noticed this now) and had a relapse which I was able to recover from with myincredible luck within a month. what is interesting, is I noticed that eating baked garlic had an immense positive affect on me and I began eating it almost every friday and saturday, the reason is that the gas as a result was trophy worthy.
my most recent relapse occurred after going on vacation in eastern europe, I had been doing great, eating and drinking whatever I want for the last couple of years with respect to weekly garlic. I had a lot of schnitzel among other food and began having an issue again this time it stayed and has not 100% gone since, the other item out of the ordinary on this trip was that I had 'Magnesium water' just items out of ordinary not saying they caused it, just notes.....
since this trip, I have been clear and not clean since until about
a month ago when its been getting a bit worse. I still have not been taking any medicine and have tried a few things like acidopholis and manuka honey etc, I also tried eating a lot of fruit and raw vegan with no real results.
right now as I right this I am constipated and have not gotten out more than hotdog size BMs for the full week, I know I'm not emptying and as you can guess it's frustrating among other things I'm dealing with.
I will follow up, but I thought I'd introduce myself to the forum with a BIO after I feel like I've read a lot of the conversations back and forth for the past few hours I thought it was appropriate.
on a side note, like very few others, when I am in remission, I can eat and drink anything with zero consequences. In general, because of my incredibly healthy wife, I've been eating pretty healthy for the past few years but to be honest, other than losing a few pounds no different (I am not overweight at the moment)
some other side notes:
I do not exercise, and I really want to change this but my mind or body seems to make it difficult to start any time I try to....
until 2 years ago, I used to eat steak 3-4 nights a week (no correlation before or after I stopped - with exception I noticed that fatty steaks seem to make me constipated, so I began avoiding those.)
while I do not exercise most people think I am fit and do exercise because I am fairly slender.
I am vigilantly against taking medicine daily, I have not taking anything for just about
12 years now other than the occasional multivitamin.
I know I am stubborn, no need to remind me
if you got this far, you know more about
me than 95% of the people I know. I will be following up in the future and look forward to contributing to the conversations, I am hopelessly optimistic in thinking that I can beat this. If you've gotten this far, I'd love to hear about
others histories.
