I was wondering if anyone has seasonal flare ups. It seems to me that I almost always have problems when the fall season starts.

I seem to always flare up around Christmas time. Not sure if it's cold weather-related or stress-related or what.

My doc has over 300 UC patients. He told me we all have seasonal flares, mainly spring and fall.
Personally, for me summers are good, winters are bad and whenever I have to get a scope, it sends me into a flare.

Yea winter season for me too. I took a trip to seattle a month ago and it was rainy/cold the whole time. Started flaring a few days later :(

Yes, I most definitely flare more during certain seasons. Fall and Spring seem to be the worst for me!

Same here, fall and winter kick my butt, (no pun intended). I had a severe flair in april of this year that put me in the hospital and I just started a nother one 6 weeks ago, but this one, so far, is not to bad.
Ive had colitis since I was 13, Im now 56, but I treated it without meds right up until this year. The last flair was the first severe one I ever had, so Im on asacol now. Im hoping the asacol is the reason this flair is not getting to bad so far.( Only going 2 to 3 times a day, and still formed with very little bleeding, so Im keeping my fingers crossed.
But for sure fall triggers it off most every year. Im thinking its living north of where I use to live, I came from Miami, and now live in Ventura ca...Ventura is a good deal north of Miami and my symptoms do seem worse since I moved here 15 years ago, or its just the progression of the disease. Dont know. I think it might be sun light and chemistry changes in the body, or temperature. Hormones, neurotransmitters and so on do respond to environmental changes for sure.
For me diet, stress and seasonal changes, all seem to be a huge part of my illness.

I am glad I found this site. It's been 1 year since Jan 18th since diagnosed. I have been on 2400 mg per day asacol and have been good. 1 to 2 bm's a day no blood or pain. I have had an increase to 2 to 5 in a 2 hr time in the am after getting up then fine all day just a bit gassy. Dr increased Asacol to 1 pill and a half a week ago to a slight improvement. a Nurse told me to add vitamin D which I am going to do. I definitely think its seasonal where its flared about
the same time last year. I do not limit diet and wonder what others tend to eat? From what I have read others of you have had it a lot worse so I feel blessed!

You can do upto a maximum of 4,800 mgs of asacol a day. Why deal with seasonal flare, when a continuous higher dose might just stop seasonal flares from happening. Seems, to me, like your dose is to low. Ask your gastroenterologist.

Add rectal meds. What asacol are you using...400 mg or 800mg?

Asacol tablets should never be cut in half. They have a delayed-release chemical coating. When you cut a pill, it will never place the medication in the right place... crushed/cut pills are a really bad idea.

First flare was March, but that was supposedly due to a combo of Naproxen and then back to back cycle of antibiotics for a bad sinus infection. The two flares I had that landed me in hospital for an extended period were October and September respectively. Since Remicade I am only bothered by my IBS...that's not seasonal...its just being dumb and eating the wrong thing😀. I think vitamin D helps a lot since I live in the north country...my GI said she sees a lot of people affected by seasonal changes...

if it was your idea to cut a pill in half, well then you're macguyver !
if it was your docs idea, well then he's not too bright -
ya, stick with the whole pill and round up as needed -

Hi,
My son is 15 and his UC is cyclical. It started around feb/march when he was 8 and has been that way ever since. Last year we thought we were going to miss a year but his flare was around the end of may. We have contributed his flares to his activity. If he does too much and gets run down he will flare at this time. We just figured out the activity part. So here we are waiting to see if he will flare as he reduces the amount of activity he has. So far his lialda and canasa is working. Crossing fingers

If he's flaring regularly then get him on stronger UC medications like azathioprine/imuran, 6MP, or a biologic like remicade/humira.
