Still researching different nutrition things with regard to Colitis (have basically stopped my dairy intake for over a week and do notice some improvements in terms of cramping/etc) My chiropractor had told me about Andrew Perlot and his "raw food diet"... Just checked it out.

It seems pretty intense and I don't know how I would do this long term. But I'm certainly in need of adding more fruits and vegetables to my diet... Was wondering if anyone here has any experience with this? http://www.raw-food-health.net/ColitisCure.html

How does your gut currently handle high fiber and raw vegetables? That's problematic for some and helpful for others.

Have you tried SCD or paleo? Those are the most common UC diets, many have tried over the years here. Seems SCD produces fairly good results for some (the most common).

iPoop - still trying to figure out what causes what -what makes me have more cramps, or makes me queasy/nauseous or not. I definitely notice a difference without the milk/dairy in my diet. Hadn't looked at paleo (not sure what SCD is) but will definitely check them out. Thanks for the suggestion

As John/ipoop said you are dealing with at least 2 distinct potential issues in a raw food diet. Many of us because of inflammation and thinning of the lining of the colon cannot handle raw vegetables that have a lot of unsoluable fiber, like celery for example. Also when you don't cook vegetables in some fashion you are consuming more lectins, which you can find more about on the internet and why people with delicate digestive systems avoid them. Also many people with UC, especially those that get diarrhea easily do not handle raw fruits or anything with fructose well. I tried a raw food diet within a couple of years of being diagnosed with UC and it tore my colon up badly.

No I eat a low carb, low lectin and histamine, paleo like diet. I do eat a lot of steamed veggies with each meal.

I do feel and know that there are some people well suited to a raw diet, but I am unfortunately not one of them.

I did the raw food diet for almost 2 years. Very hard to sustain but i was able to go off all meds 60 days in and remained symptom free until I slowly started going back to the standard American diet. Worst mistake ever. Flare got so bad. Have had trouble going back to the raw diet cuz I love food and I've been flaring. But I'll tell you, I never felt better and healthier I all my life than when I was a raw foodie. I followed the 80/10/10 diet. AMAZING!!! Once I am certain I am in remission, I'm going to go back toneating a high raw diet again. I just need my colon to heal first.

Appreciate everyone's sharings - but must admit I'm more confused then ever. So much different information out there - all with testimonies of people that something worked for them (which I completely believe) - while at the same time testimonies of how same approach was worst mistake ever.

More and more thinking this is like allergies - I might be allergic to peanuts - while you can eat them fine but are allergic to milk - and we both are in the bathroom with stomach pains from different causes

Jim, I think you have come to the right conclusion, that we are all somewhat different, and what works for some won't work for others. Still I hope that doesn't discourage you! I strongly encourage you to find a diet that works best for you. While there are some here that swear they have no food sensitivities, that defies logic too me (assuming they are not taking biologics or immune suppressants that mask symptoms). If you have UC then there is inflammation and probably damage to the villa, etc. Finding foods you digest well, i.e. doesn't cause bloating or other symptoms is difficult, but very worth it. You may still need to be on meds like Lialda even with the right diet, but if you can avoid prednisone and the stronger meds, it sure is going to help you age well. Best, B.

Boris - many thanks for the encouragement... it is a bit maddening and in truth, because I'm single, and don't cook, I eat "on the run" a lot. Try to pick up healthy options (ie Yogurt, which I don't particularly care for, but figured its high in protein, it's "natural", etc) - and because I haven't really had food allergies since I was a kid, haven't thought about it as much.

Talking to my Mom last night though, she recounted how when I was in 4th grade I was told I was allergic to yeast, sugar, soy and rye (I think) - it was an insanely restrictive diet particularly 30 years ago when my options were so limited. But Mom reminded me that there were alot of stomach aches at the time and headaches...

I still have a lot of allergies, but go through so many peaks and valleys - and have been able to kind of push through without shots - just with a anti histiamine a day...exercise, etc. But I know allergies can change over the years (10 years ago, I was completely symptom free)

Anyway - TMI - for now, it's trying to find the right nutritionist to assist me.

One bit of progress - my GI didn't disagree with looking at food options and even offered to refer me to a dietician/nutritionist... Reading other people's experiences with talking to their doc, I was kind of shocked. But I'm realizing more and more they have little understanding of this disease.

Jim, you hit the nail on the head. What works for one may not work for another, which is why I always say to never discount anything, take the negatives with a grain of salt, and to try everything because you just never know what will work for YOU. We can only share our experiences, both good and bad, in hopes that it will help someone else or spark an idea to healing our bodies.

And you are correct, most GI's have little understanding of this disease. They know the symptoms and what to prescribe to reduce the inflammation, but they have no idea what causes the inflammation to begin with.
