My own attitude is simple ... I am very skeptical of dogma of any kind
Whether it be totally pro-med, anti-other stuff
Totally anti-med, pro-other stuff
Only diet, don't worry about stress
Only stress, don't worry about diet
Illness is totally random, doesn't care about lifestyle and other factors
Illness only cares about lifestyle and other factors, not totally random
Etc etc etc
I think the balance lies in the fact that everybody can find something that works for them (and at the end of the day that 'something' might be surgery). Well, not everybody ... but most seem to.
But we do have to acknowledge that there is no evidence for certain treatments. That doesn't mean they are ineffective, that means we don't have any evidence it is effective.
Whereas, the drugs on the market have all gone through trials and testing.
How reliable that is, is very debateable. But at least it's SOMETHING. And there are just some things that I think you'd be mad not to try, for example mesalazine. That's my bias and if it's not for you it's not for you. But knowing how well some of these things help people, to not even explore the option seems a little short sighted imo.
At the end of the day we're all trying to do our best to make sense of this rather mysterious scenario we've landed up in, and until we've got a lot more info, we will make do like this. And a support forum like this is an excellent place to share such discussions!
