Black stool ..new symptom should I be concerned

Is black stool common with UC?

When I see blood in my stool it is always usually maroon coloured and thick, or pure red and watery-ish... I believe it may have something to do with transit time, as I notice the blood the most if I'm going like 20x a day, in my head I'm thinking the blood just doesn't have time to darken since I'm going so often. However, 4000mg sulfasalazine in combination with SCD intro has gotten me down to about 1-2 bm's /day .. still having cramps and stomach pains and an insane amount of mucus, but I haven't noticed blood in a few days , until today when I had a hard, almost constipated type PURE BLACK bowel movement. Should I be concerned? Is it a possible side affect of the med , or does it mean the bleeding is higher up than I thought? OR could it just be due to transit time and the fact that I have been semi-constipated?

I have an appt with my GI again next week, but I'm not sure if the fact that I'm having such bad cramps and now black stool should mean a trip in to the doctor sooner?

** No, I did not eat anything dark. I'm no longer doing a liquid diet, but I've only eaten oatmeal, rice, cherrios with almond milk and chicken for the past 2 days. **

No, I didn't actually. I need to change my signature.. getting the scope next week hopefully they have me on an emergency cancellation list so I'll be taking the first available appointment

No, not taking any supplements right now. Only thing I am currently taking is the Sulfasalazine, and I only really started properly eating a few days ago, as I'm finally getting my appetite back like I said.. all kind of lighter things like chicken, rice and oatmeal.

if you are not taking any iron supplement then its bleeding in upper part of colon.red blood mean fresh blood like from rectum or descending colon,if blood stays for longer in GI track then it turns black as it stays longer in your body so it means its not coming from rectum.so i suggest you to visit your doc soon

Perhaps I'll email her, I should have my scope within the next week or two as she said a lot of people cancel this time of year and I'll be the first person they call in.

I'm just wondering if it's possible that I've always been bleeding from higher up, but maybe since I was going to the bathroom so often it just never had time to darken? Is that a silly theory? I guess now I'm kind of worried it could be so high in the GI tract that it wouldn't be reached by the colonoscopy (like in the small bowel).. Since the lighter blood, mucus and palpated areas of inflammation had UC on the doctors radar.. Would UC reach high enough for the blood to be black?

My blood levels are always normal, so even though I've been insanely sick I guess I have this feeling or worry deep down that I'm not going to get any answers from the colonoscopy either.. so much doubt and worry I can't wait to get this all overwith.


Quincy : the toilet paper didn't even have colour, like there was nothing really to be wiped away, strangely enough. I've had one blackish green bowel movement before, a few weeks ago - again , after like a day of not going to the bathroom much and after some serious bleeding the day before.. and at that time the toilet paper looked like greeny/black ..

Blackened stool is likely stomach bleeding (aka a stomach ulcer) or at least high up in the small intestine. Blood is bright red from the rectum, gets a darker red as it originates from the left side, then right side, and anything higher up is black.

You said no to iron pills. Do you take any charcoal pills? As those can cause black stool as well.

Ditto check with your doctor.
