I'm curious where the "many UC patients do not have pain" comes from. I had severe UC and was bent over in pain requiring pain meds (Tramadol, not just Tylenol).
I never had much pain. I had some cramping that responded very quickly to Tyl-III, and for some periods I would have a sore/raw anus. Never, never, had the kind of doubled-over or nausa-inducing pain some describe. And any cramping was not associated with the time right after a BM.
There are a limited number of nerve endings in the colon to receive pain signals.
When I first joined here I noticed some people describing pain as the major symptom. Just like some described constipation as the major symptom - which was 100% not my experience.
I began to see other posts where people said they did not have much pain - just blood and D.
As I read I saw pain was more often associated with gas and IBS in the literature than IBD, but it varied from person to person.
Apologies if the word "many" seemed odd. Perhaps I could have said "a number of" or "quite a few" or "a significant portion of"
I don't know the exact percentage with significant pain. I suspect not a majority, and I also suspect not a majority who have little pain.
Well, anyway, that's where that came from
