I have recently seen and read about
the potential benefits of cabbage juice, especially red cabbage juice on UC. There is a guy on YouTube who posted several videos about
his journey with UC and using red cabbage juice.
I don't have a juicer, but I can make a drink out of it with my blender on the liquefy setting.
I eat lots of red cabbage, so I can tolerate cabbage, but I don't know if there is some added benefit if the cabbage is run through a juicer? I can blend it enough to get a drinkable consistency.
Is that acceptable, or is a juicer a must?
Thanks-
J

Cabbage gives me terrible gas. I am not sure if there is more benefit from juicing vs blending, sorry.

The fiber kills me, the juice alone would work better for me.

I juice red cabbage every morning, I think it would be fine if you did it in a blender, but in your case, just use a strainer to get rid of the extra gunk and drink! What kind of blender do you have? One of the fancy new Vitamix/Blentec blenders? Just asking because I really want one! Good luck to you!
I dont have gas from juicing cabbage and I've been doing it for over a month now,
Another great detox combination to try is Apple, Carrot & Ginger, so yummy.

Thanks for all replies so far!!
Stereo,
No, just a regular cuisinart blender; nothing fancy at all. I would love a vitamix, too. I just am making do with the liquify setting on my standard blender. I blend greens -- collards, kale, spinach-- and today some cabbage with a cup of water or so and get a drink that way. It feels like someone has given me a shot of 100% clean energy when I make one of the drinks.
They don't taste great at all, but the energy rush from the drinks is really great. It is almost hard to explain unless you are getting the same energy boost from juices.
Thanks,
J

It doesn't matter. Its the fiber you should be careful with since its insoluble form, can really scrub your intestine. If that bothers you then blend it really (REALLY) well. Take muslin/cheese cloth and squeeze the (sort of) puree through. Its a little effort but you get really good juice. If you need, put very little water while blending.
This is the process that my parents use, even though they have a centrifugal juicer (which is a pain to clean).

When you 'juice' you lose most if not all the fiber though... :/ but yes I agree with you delta, that insoluble is what kills the intestines... Perhaps I should refrain from my morning oatmeal pancakes. :(
JayGuitar, thats great you're feeling good from it! I was like that at first too, to make cabbage taste better, add 2 carrot sticks, they are naturally sweet and some sugar to them... but none of us can really recognize it because we're so accustom to high level of sugar intake.
Its amazing though, I had a few sips of a Pepsi 2 weeks ago after being strict with the SCD diet for a while, and the sugar nearly knocked me off my feet, was so good... but foreign because I hadnt had that much sugar in a while.

This is a very old thread but I wanted to thank you guys, I was flaring and I tried red cabbage juice with carrot juice, it stopped the flare within a fortnight, nothing else was working even modern medicine..
I dont know if its a long term solution but so far its only been 6-8 weeks so its very early days

I juice every morning and I haven't had a bad flare since I started - except the two times I have come off Budesonide and when I go on vacation and am away from my juicer. I always use red cabbage. Over the years I've added pineapple for the bromelain, sweet potatoes for the quercetin, spinach because of the anecdotal claims about
it, and celery, apple and orange just because.
Recently, I've begun with a shot of ginger and fresh turmeric root juice emulsified with a tablespoon of grass-fed ghee or coconut oil and a bit of black pepper. My colon is really calm. No pain or tenderness at all.

Thanks jerseyguy1,
Glad to be part of the team
It's awesome to hear that other people having success with red cabbage juice too. UC is a real nightmare to deal with.. I also read that mixing fresh carrot juice compliments it with beta carotene.

what are you all using for your juicing - i.e., what brand of juicer, how often, how much per day, what kind of prep, etc, ?
juicing is an absolute pain in the ass - but said ass always benefits from doing it ! just can't get in the habit so looking for some useful tips to get me motivated -

I use a Breville.
I use a huge finger of ginger and a full handful of turmeric root. Then, I juice it with a half a cucumber. Then, I emulsify the resulting juice with a tablespoon of coconut oil or grass-fed ghee. I put a little black pepper in with it and emulsify it all in my NutriBullet.
I drink it all down.
Then, I juice red cabbage with celery, pineapple, sweet potato, apple and an orange.
The whole thing takes me 20 minutes.
It may be a pain in the ass. But, my actual ass don't hurt because I am only on the toilet twice a day.

I really love this thread and I have a juicer that takes out all the pulp and fibre. I've had it for twenty years actually (the juicer) and I'm going to start this. Even once or twice a week. Today I had miso soup, a banana, and creamy vegetable soup (blended with coconut milk. I don't know yet,but I think raw veggies give me a twinge every time I eat one. I know we all react differently to different foods, but I enjoy hearing about
other people are doing with their diet. (I guess it's the one thing I can control)
