BAM! Stomach Virus and UC's gone crazy!

Hi - I've been experiencing a mild to moderate flare for the past 2 - 3 months which I've been having trouble getting under control with the combo of Entyvio x 4 weeks (just moved to the 4 week intervals), uceris oral and the foam, but nothing that I couldn't handle.

Then, about 5 days ago, I believe I picked up a stomach bug. It was not like my UC, it was full blown all day/night and cramping pain. Now, 5 days later, I feel like the bug subsided and my UC is completely out of control because of the amount of blood loose.

I can't eat a thing. I've been on a liquid diet and down 8lbs.

Has anyone ever experienced a worsening of UC from a stomach bug?

I'm trying to validate what I believe is happening to me.

Thoughts?!!

Yeah, it has happened. Hopefully as your immune system calms down the flare intensity will do the same. In the meantime I would pick up your probiotics to repopulate. Also take fiber to help wash out some of the bad guys. Finally... can you use mesalamine enemas? If yes, I would add them to the mix (foam in the morning, meslamine at night) Just a few thoughts. Hope you feel better!

I appreciate your response so very much. I was able to get in to see my doc on Friday. I hope they can do something without the dreaded prednisone approach.

I came down with Norovirus (what people call stomach flu) in November and was so sick that I had to go to the ER (my brother as well, we were together for a weekend when we picked up the bug) and it set in motion the current flare that is kicking my butt.

A stomach bug can definitely cause a flare, in fact any infection can, even a regular cold or flu. I have noticed that if my (now ex) partner and I would get sick from the same dodgy meal for example, he would recover in about 3 days but I would take much longer. I think there is a defect with how we can recover from these things, or maybe we just have less good bugs to spare, then there's also the immune response which goes haywire with us

I suggest getting stool testing done.

Increase your probiotics!

Let's not keep regurgitating gastro bugs/invaders as the stomach flu.....just because of the obvious. Yes, it's a pet peeve.

Ditto stool test as a precaution if it persists. Bad bugs like c diff can creep up on us...

Prednisone stopped my flaring with Flagyl and Cipro. First doctors put me on Lialda and Apriso which made it 100x worse and I ended up in the hospital for 5 days. Stopped the meds and so far just the prednisone and antibiotics are working. I initially lost 20lbs in 2 weeks from the flare and diet wise nothing helped. Now off Apriso and Lialda I feel almost normal again and can eat solid foods.
