no picture in colonoscopy report

Dear all.

I have ulcerative cilitis pancolitis diagnosed in 2016. Report was full of picture and finding remarks.

Yesterday I have had a followup colonoscopy (Second Colonodcopy) but this time in my colonscopy report there was no picture!!!! Report was like this:

Rectum :
patchy loss of normal vascular pattern
Sigmoid:
patchy loss of normal vascular pattern
D colon:
patchy loss of normal vascular pattern
T colon:
patchy loss of normal vascular pattern

Asending colon: patchy loss of normal vascular pattern

Caecum: patchy loss of normal vascular pattern

Ileum: NORMAL

Impression:

Patchy loss of nornal vascular pattern from rectum to caecum. Multiple biopsy were taken.

I asked hospital guy. They said that no picture will be required. Doctor can understand what is meant by "patchy loss of normal vascular pattern" and biopsy report is the main thing.


Can doctor understand without picture?? With finding "patchy loss of normal vascular pattern."????

In your country do doctors provide picture in report?? Is it necessary for doctors?? Or only finding remak is enough. Please let me know.

Hi Ramin,

I've done a few scopes in my country and all of them have had accompanying pictures of different areas of the colon.

I'm personally not sure if having pictures is compulsory, but you could maybe discuss this with your doctor about taking and including pictures for future scopes.

The biopsies will provide information about inflammation on the microscopic level and that might be what the hospital staff was referring to.

But I'm no expert, maybe other forum members can provide their opinion too! smile

No pictures are not a necessity. Pictures are nice to have for reference, if there's something unusual or unexpected and you do not have anything like that.

Congrats on getting such a good colonoscopy report! There's zero inflammation noted an that's great/ideal! Whatever treatment you are currently doing is working well, so keep doing it whether you feel well or bad to ensure things stay good.

Again, a loss of vascular pattern is very normal, and everyone posting on the UC forum likely has the same thing, as it's so common with UC. I wish we could all be inflammation-free, like you smile

Just for clarification.....you are assuming no inflammation because it wasn't mentioned, correct?

@OP, I have never seen any pictures either. I have had 3 colonoscopies (I have follow up for number 3 in a few weeks) I am going to ask about that. I get knocked out for my scopes every time, but I know there are some people who remain awake and watch the whole thing on a screen !

That's not in my cards, as I am happy to sleep right through it and wake up, get dressed and leave the building. But I sure would be interested in actually seeing a few pics of what they describe in report.

Nothing is mentioned about imflamation in report. Does it seem that there is no mentionable immflamation?? But they took multiple biopsy.

What does it mean?? Isnt it confusing?? Picture would remove these confusion. What a poor idea not to include picture in report!!!

Well, in fairness I never asked to see anything. I had no idea there would be pictures taken (and maybe there weren't).

If I were you I'd try and relax around this. If biopsies were taken, those are very detailed results and will tell you the answers to these questions. Here it takes a week or two for them to come in and once the report is available, I discuss that with my doctor on my return consultation.

As far as not mentioning inflammation, maybe because there wasn't any at the moment? a good thing. Both of my two previous reports did say they found inflammation and even this time my doctor peeked into my room and we discussed that she found it again (mild though which I am happy about).

No need to worry.....your questions will be answered and in the mean time, relaxing is a great idea smile

It does sound like you are pretty worried and anxious Ramin and there is absolutely no cause to be worried with a report like yours. If this was a test then you would have scored a 100 out of 100 points, or an A+ score, and likely in a remission. You'd have to confirm with the biopsy report, of course.

How are your UC symptoms? With a scope like that, I'd expect no troubles at all.

Symtoms:
1. My weight is reducing. Feb 17 it was 65. Yesterday it was 58 kg
2. In each 3 to 4 weeks once or twice small bleeding. No drop. Blood adhered to stool.
3. Sometimes white coating on few portion or stool.

Yesterday i did blood test and usg of abdomen.
Hemoglobin 15.2
Wbc, rbc, platelate are well in limit
Liver function test is ok
Only alkalibe phosphate is high. 183 ( maximum limit 120)
Usg report said no abnormality in kidney liver gall blader pancreas except mesenteric lymph nodes
( what does it mean??? Is it important??)
Tsh is in limit

Again, nothing in the above is concerning either regarding UC, and it sounds like you are doing quite well!

How many times a day do you have bowel movement? Is it urgent?

Mesenteric Lymph Nodes, means inflammation is present within your lymph nodes. I don't know much about it, you'd have to ask a doctor.

You have to wait for the biopsies pathology report regarding inflammation....but things seem like they're going really well regarding healing.

What you can do the next time is ask for twilight sedation and watch the monitor. Ive never gotten a pic, but my doc does take them.

What meds are you on?

Bowl movement : Twice a day. Before and after breakfast. No exceptional urgency. Normal urgency.

My concern is weight loss and occatinal small bleeding( it means not in complete remission).

Meds: mesalamine 3.6 g per day
Probiotic cap twice a day
Zinc n vitamin b complex twice a day as i am not having red meat last one year.

Psyllium husk.

In addition i have changed my food habit. Very little oil. No spice. Less onion. But more garlic and zinger . Egg twice a day boiled. And lot of fish. Sometimes chicken. My main food is rice as i am asian.

Weight loss is associated with significant UC inflammation, which you do not have.

Are you eating enough calories per day based on your current activity-level? I know we can become rather adverse to eating during and after a flareup of our UC. As it's easy to equate eating with pain later... I had to force myself to eat normal portions after a flare.

Do you have hemorrhoids as they can bleed?

In my previous colonoscopy and yesterdays colonoscpy nothing was mentioned about hemorrhoids

it does sound like a occasional drop of blood on the stool is hemorrhoids

I always had my scoped done by my GI. He saw the scope and he wrote the report. They showed me some pictures after, but it was for me - not the GI. He/she had already seen.

Sounds like someone else did your scope?

I've never seen pictures with my scope report. However, ever since Quincy suggested it (as she has above) always watched the monitor while the scope is being done. I am never put under during the scope, they just do the twilight sedation where you are awake but calm, relaxed, and chill. (Gee, where can I get this stuff for my everyday life???)

This time i did c scopy in a gastroentrology hospital where c scope is done by some guys and colonscopy report and biopsy report is seen by doctors. They are not same guy.

There are always accompanying pictures with my colonoscopy report I receive. Not looking forward to having that done later this month.

I have yet to see a single picture from my colonoscopies. The flex-sigs don't even have a screen that i can see...
