Here I am...again.. Now GE says mezavant?

Hello Everyone, I'm back. smhair Was doing so so great for 3 yrs on no meds then kablooie July 29/17. Scope both ends Aug 8/17. Doc says mezavant now, it used to be asacol 3x2/day. And he prescribed prednisone 50 mg for 10 days start then taper, havent taken it either yet.
I read side effects of mezavant, looks very scary to me, never used it. Prednisone and I do not get along at all.
Undecided about all meds. Was thinking to start mez at 1 per day to get my body used to it? I only using entocort for now nightly. My doc sent msg to GE about this instead of oral pred. Suggestions? Thanks

3 years is a nice long vacation - what exactly did you do to attain that and what changed that got you heading down kablooie road - and what does that kablooie look like ?

I slowly tapered off the meds, didnt do anything too fantastic, just watched what I ate. Stayed same basic foods, no greasy cooking, steamed veggies, lots of homemade soups, well cooked meats (rarely pork tho) drank lots water, kept stress levels down. Kept physically active.

Had some minor episodes I kept under control with enemas.

What started it again for me was junk food, greasy foods, drank lots coffee, orange juice, apple juice, beer. And stress, doing too much all day and not taking time to rest.

There was stomache bug going around too, thought it was that but it turned back into u.c. It was like watery diarrhea for a week then the awful familiar mucus and blood came.

I would definitely take the mezavant, it's a 90 percent topical medication well tolerated by most without experiencing serious side effects. I've taken the usa version known as lialda for 5 years now and have yet to experience a side effect from it. Start with a lower dose if it helps you feel better/safer.

Makes me feel better. Going to start today and give it a go. I plan to do one in a.m. and another in p.m. Entocort are helping a lot.

I take mezavant and I can honestly say that it is like taking nothing at all, no side effects, nothing, I just notice that it makes my gut feel more settled but that's all. Definitely take it, 5-ASAs also reduce your risk of colon cancer which we are more susceptible too, so that in itself is a better reason to take it than nothing at all.

Good to hear things were going well for a long while.
Absolutely use the mezavant. The side effects are the same as asacol.

Yes still seeing Dr. Moffat. Am taking the Mezavant 1 pill twice a day and doing the Entocort. Things seem to be settling down now. I noticed the Mezavant makes me a bit sleepy, unless I now catching up on my rest? I also had a chance to finally sip on about 1/8 cup of coffee! That was a treat!

The mezavant won't make you sleepy.....you were on asacol for so long, same medication. I'm inclined to say it's because you are flaring.

The entocort could also have a hand in your tiredness.

Have you had stool sampling done since you had c.diff in the past?

No I did not get any stool sampling, the thought did cross my mind. You mentioned the entocort probably contributing to sleepiness, thats interesting.

Forgot to mention also, from endoscopy results, I have a hernia in my stomach which is causing GERD. Thats just great news, didnt expect that. I am noticing heartburn like sharp occasional pains, it catches my breath at times. Was thinking if I should ask for h pylori test again? I use a tum if it gets bad.
BM report, starting to have form now, rarely any blood or mucus.
