Sigmoidoscopy report help !!!

Hi all I had a sigmoidoscopy today the 2nd one in less than a year . My first suggested proctitis but biopsies were normal so I was told to stop using the suppositories but continued with symptoms off and on . I've been given the report today stating proctitis again and prescribed enemas . The report says mucosa : moderate erythema and granularity. Mild mucopurulent exudate . The first one said mucosa :extensive moderate erythema. Extensive mild congestion . Does it look like it's got worse ?

New report:
moderate severity of redness from inflammation (erythema)
moderate severity of grain-like appearance from inflammation
mild severity of mucus and puss (mucopurulent exudate)

Old report:
extensive areas of moderate severity redness suggestive of inflammation (erythema)
extensive areas of mild congestion/mucus.

I'd say the old report was maybe slightly worse than the new, as the amount seen was quantified as extensive within the old report. Although the new report covers a grain-like appearance not noted within the old report. Maybe call it a crapshoot/draw?

Thank you so much John . I was concerned that if I had had proctitis all along it may have got worse due to lack of medication . Now I guess I 'll wait for the biopsy results.

Have you had a c-scope as well?

What enemas? How high is the inflammation?

Similar to you my original colonoscopy biopsies were normal and I had been using Canasa but was told to stop after the results. Symptoms reappeared and I had a Sigmoidoscopy which almost looked normal per my GI doc but the biopsies then showed very mild proctitis. I wish my doc had told me about the enemas at that time like yours has. It would have saved me a lot of pain and issues that followed when Canasa was not enough. It sounds like your doc know what he/she is doing and the enemas should help a lot of its mild proctitis.

Sorry to hear you ve been through it too . Do you get a lot of pain when in a flare ? I've never had pain and all Drs and my consultant thought it would be hemmies .to say I was shocked when diagnosed originally is an understatement . I'm not looking forward to doing the enema I've read a lot of horror stories.

@quincy no ive only had 2 sigmoidoscopies . The 1st report states the proctitis is limited to the 1st 6cm but the 2nd report doesn't say .

I suggest you push for a full scope with biopsies throughout includine the cecum.

You very well may be in earliest symptoms of UC. Have you had stool sampling done?

Do you have a copy of initial biopsies?

What horror stories with enemas???

Those enemas were insanely easy to use and very effective at getting my proctitis (and even some of the sigmoid) into clinical remission. Just thought I'd pop in and give them a little love smilewinkgrin

I did mention a full scope but the consultant says there is no need .
I had a stool sample taken that came back normal .
I never got a copy of the biopsy results just a copy of the letter sent to my gp which stated " the lady's sigmoidoscopy raised the possibility of proctitis. However the biopsies were completely normal with no evidence of inflammation "
Re horror stories I've read people that couldn't retain them and getting some up in the night with stomach pains . There were others too but I have up reading them . I did get stomach pains when using the asacol suppositories which stopped when I stopped using them .

I get it. I was mortified in the beginning, but it's just a part of my routine these days---quick and easy. I even fired my partner because I am more stealthy, lol

Request and get a copy of both biopsies report!

Perception can set you up for micromanaging which actually doesn't give you enough experience. I dont hear horror stories regarding enemas. Again perception and judgement.

Ive used them for 28 years......i grumble sometimes, but did I mention 28 years?

What enemas exactly?

You need a c-scope to examine your entire colon and cecum. Ask your GP to request one by another doctor. ASSuming no other part of your colon is involved is just downright stoopid and lazy on the doctor's part.

I will certainly speak to my Dr about the c scope and biopsy reports .
To be honest it was absolutely fine doing the enema and so far no side effects . I'm using pentansa enemas .
