I've been using pentasa enemas once a night for just over a week after being diagnosed with proctitis. My symptoms disappeared after one day of using them but they give me stomach cramps straight after which I believe is normal . I was initially told to use them for 14 days and I'm waiting for a follow up appointment with my gi but my gp has just rang telling me to continue using them until I get my appointment. Will I always have the stomach cramps or will it get better ? Although they only last minutes I dread using them .

I've never gotten stomach cramps before. Are you squeezing all of the air out before administering?

The air does come out when it's twisted open but I can't squeeze it as it's full . Do you think I may be squeezing too air in at the end ? I have read of people leaving a drop in the bottom so they don't squeeze air out . I'm sorry for all the questions but I'm new to this ☹

It's normal, and i agree with your GP. Hope you have refills.
Pentasa is 100ml of liquid....that will trigger some discomfort.
I suggest you ask your GI for oral mesalamine...low dosage.

Do you mean stomach cramps or abdominal? And how long do they last?

How are you administering the enemas?

I have to pick another prescription up on Monday. The cramps are right at the bottom of my stomach, they only last for a few minutes but can take my breath away . I try to breath through them .
I'm lying on my left side with my right knee over my left leg . I have followed the instuctions . Is there a better way of doing it ?

Nope....i whimper, pant, hold my breath, breathe slowly out throuh pursed lips, white knuckle theough, bite the sheets if necessary (just joking with this one) ...lol. you could ask the doc for dicyclomine and take it a half hour before bedtime and using the enema.

But, you could bend both legs in fetal position after using the med. I administer with both legs bent together...😎

The few times I've used enemas I would always get cramps. As previously suggested by others I would lie down on my left side and hold on as long as possible! It does get easier, either that or you get used to it.

Ive also used suppositories which area little easier. They only treat the very last bit of bowel though.

I used the suppositories before with no problems but were taken off them by my gi
