Surgery cost-deductibles etc etc etc

Dr wants me to go for MRE[1,000 DEDUCTIBLE] and I'm wondering do i have surgery in same calendar year bc of deductibles etc? What have some of u done??

Well,if you need it, you need it. But if it can wait until next year or all be done before this insurance year is up (which for me is in February) save yourself some money and do it all so you only have to pay the deductible once.

I just got diagnosed. My wife and I were talking last night and pretty much decided that we should just plan for and get comfortable with having to meet the deductible and probably max out of pocket every year. These meds are expensive and all the doctor visits...yikes.

Never been in this situation before. Usually just went to my general doc once or twice a year and got some cough syrup or antibiotics. Cost me $100 to $200 a year. It's a whole new world. So thankful I have insurance. Always promoted universal health care in the states and after this experience I'm even more convinced...I digress, sorry to get out the soapbox.

Are you self employed? You might be able to cancel your policy and get a better policy with less deductibles. Ask your insurance agent.

I planned mine out; I switched policies to get the surgeon that I wanted at the copays that I wanted. I think mine was $1250 for the hear.

Evan I'm talking about surgery,which is costly compared to an ER visit and few days in Hospital.Not self employed,have insurance thru wife.Not sure if deductible for MRE would fall under same as hospital charges??? both being done at Cornell

I'd call your insurance and ask. All policies are different. But in general I'd try to have it all done in one year.

I remember you wanted to have surgery during your slow work season. Recovery from both surgeries could take upwards of 6 months if your two surgeries are 3 months apart and then 3 months to recover from the last surgery. I think that part of your job is some manual labor so you might have to take into account a hernia risk.

If I was in your shoes I’d focus on loss of income vs copays.

I think January is smart. It would be the slow season and it would give you the maximum time. Plus, if you hit the deductible/max OOP early, that's usually a good thing, that way, everything is covered all year.

1905-i like others always put myself/health last on the list.If surgery conflicts with busy time of year then so be it.This is something that has to get done.Besides wife says I'm a pain in the ass,so I'm hopeing the surgery will remove the pain in the ass[little joke]

That sounds like a good plan. I would have started earlier in the year if I had known I was going to do it and I had planned better. I was on pred early in the year, and things were stable for a while, I went into denial and thought I was going to avoid surgery. I thought Entyvio would be the magic bullet... Of course a few months passed, I got off pred, and my symptoms went haywire. The entyvio did literally nothing. It wasn't until mid-year that I accepted the inevitable. Surgery was costly, but I've already been able to recoup the expense by not needing doctors, procedures or drugs. Every recent year I can think of, while living with UC, I hit my max OOP.
