hi everybody newbie on this chat line. insurance ran out. starting scd diet 2 weeks in still having flares being strict on diet as possible just wondering if anyone out there had success on the diet without being on any meds ulceris colitis 35cm rectum and sigmoid

No diet ever did anything for me. If I didn't eat at all, I could halt trips to the toilet.

A lot of people who haven't had success with meds try the SCD diet cuz they have few choices so yes is the answer to your question. Also people on meds will try SCD. But doubt there are any statistics out there showing who has better success.

Try it. Sorry about your insurance running out. What RX were you taking before this happened.
I tried SCD a couple times and got a little success but had to do a lot of tinkering because my gut does not like some of the foods that are on their "OK" list.

Diet modification helped me more than RX meds did and I went a year without RX while on a diet mod. I went back on RX because the supplement I took instead of RX (turmeric capsules) was too high a dose and caused non-healing skin problems. But the turmeric was great for my UC.

Thanks for all the info I have to wait for the beginning of the year for my insurance to kick in I'm going to the GI Doc see if I can get samples I was on uceris foam and lialda to be honest my symptons is about the same when I was on meds. just have more blood with out meds. these meds are expensive hopefully the doctor will subscribe other meds that are cheaper had ulceris colitis for 3 years hopefully the diet will help been on it for 9 days not seeing much of a difference ill give it 3 months

Eliminating insoluble fiber really helped eliminate rectal bleeding for me. My gut just does not like much fiber but you'll have to find out what your gut says. This kind of diet mod is called "low residue" look it up for ideas. My gut (again) did not agree with some of the food on low residue food list either so that got adapted to suit too.

You could try VSL #3 until the insurance kicks in. It is a probiotic with legitimate research behind it for UC. My pharmacy orders it for me. It's expensive but less than most UC meds and you don't need a prescription.

I was on SCD without meds for 10 years. Now I take some meds for precaution but even if I go off meds and stay on SCD, no flares.

If you don't have access to medication currently definitely try SCD and see. It can't hurt. I'd also say try tumeric (the spice mixed with oil and pepper) and probiotics. Basically throw everything at it.

I was looking at vsl #3 on amazon would that be the same as getting it from a pharmacist are there different types of it. hoping to see some improvement with the scd diet on week 2 still doing intro diet waiting for improvement to start adding foods Thankyou for all the info

SCD could help or it might not help at all. Try and see but do have a backup plan just in case...

It worked for me for like 8 weeks. Then with no change or lapse in diet I started flaring again. I think it's worth trying for sure though.

If you are without insurance, you can ask your gasteroenteroligist for free samples of Lialda/Delzicol/Apriso. I've been given 30 day supplies for free before. You can also ask for a prescription for Sulfasalazine which costs less than $100 a month without an insurance policy (I've heard $80-ish for a 30-day supply).

Certainly try and get back on insurance as quickly as you can. If you lost your job you can often get COBRA insurance. Ask if you qualify for Medicaid, can buy insurance on the health exchanges, etc.

UC is a very expensive condition to have and being insured is paramount. Bad flares can hospitalize us, any number of complications can pop up (pancreatitis, infections, c diff amongst other things).

Killjoy, there is a company called GoodRx.com that offers very good discounts to people without insurance. It is a free service & accepted at all major pharmacies. All you do is type in the info about the medication & print off the coupon. Or you can download the app on your phone.

The process does take awhile, so call today to see if you can qualify. You will need your doctor's assistance to fill out the forms and send the prescription.

Raw Milk and Kefir can cure ulcerative colitis. Along with gluten free and vegan diet.

Raw milk has been amazing for me.

Thankyou for all the info My prescription plan pays up to so much a year and when I hit that limit which is usally 6 to 7 months in the year I have to pay 40 % on my meds lialda uceris and the other meds are in the thousands but I am going to look into the information that I have read on this site I want to thank everyone who responded to me I'm happy I found this website its been lot of help hoping for the best

There is now a generic Lialda as well as several other generic mesalamine formulas which are much more affordable, but less convenient (more pills to take vs. Lialda). If you switch you may be able to get through the whole year without hitting your limit.
